Abstract
Dracula, sebagai cerita vampir pertama yang terkenal dalam dunia sastra telah memberikan citra dasar tentang sosok vampir. Namun sejalan dengan berlalunya waktu, perspektif masyarakat mulai berubah. Twilight, cerita vampir yang sedang populer akhir akhir ini menjadi contoh cerita yang menyuguhkan perspektif vampir yang baru. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk menemukan persamaan sekaligus dengan perbedaan yang terdapat dalam simbol simbol yang digunakan dalam novel Dracula dan Twilight. Studi ini menggunakan metode kualititaf dengan pendekatan sastra bandingan. Secara khusus, simbol di kedua novel tersebut dibandingkan dengan menggunakan teori archetypes. Studi ini menemukan 16 (enam belas) simbol vampir yang signifikan dan menghubungkan kedua karya sastra tersebut. 7 (tujuh) simbol tersebut diantaranya adalah simbol yang memiliki arti yang sama baik dalam novel Dracula maupun Twilight. Mereka adalah : darah, es, hutan, mimpi, merah, hitam, dan putih. Sementara itu terdapat, 9 (sembilan) simbol yang ditampilkan berbeda, yaitu : menara, serigala, salib, jantung, hutan, es, bawang, kelelawar dan peti. Peneliti yang ingin melakukan penelitian di bidang yang sama dapat menggunakan objek materi yang lain maupun pendekatan yang berbeda. Para peneliti tersebut dapat menggunakan pendekatan sosial maupun psikologi untuk menganalisis psikologi karakter utama dan latar belakang sosial dalam novel ini. Peneliti tersebut juga dapat membandingkan dua material objek yang berbeda seperti novel dan film yang diadaptasi dari novel tersebut dengan menggunakan pendekatan struktural.
English Abstract
The first well-known vampire story in literature, Dracula, presents the basic image of vampires. But as the time goes by, people’s perception has slowly changed. Twilight, a recent popular novel, provides a new perspective over this mystical beast. The aim of this study is to find the differences and similarities of the symbol used in novel Dracula and Twilight and also the social background that affected the differences. This study used qualitative method by using comparative approach. Thus, the symbols in both of the novels were compared by using theory of archetypal symbol. This study revealed that there are 16 (sixteen) significant symbols of vampirism in both of the works. 7 (seven) of those symbols are the symbols which have similar meaning in both of Dracula and Twilight. They are blood, ice, forest, dream, red, black, and white. Moreover, the other 9 (nine) are the symbols that have different meaning or function. They are: the tower, wolves, cross, heart, forest, ice, garlic, bat, and coffin. Next researchers who want to conduct similar research can use other material objects or different approaches. Applying sociological approach or psychological approach to analyze the psychological condition of the main characters or the social background of the novels will be interesting. The next researchers can also compare different material objects such as novels and movies under the same titles using structuralism approach.
