Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan berdasarkan masalah yang mendasar yang dihadapi oleh guru dalam kelas. Ketika melakukan wawancara dengan guru Bahasa Inggris di MTs Surya Buana Malang, kemampuan siswa dalam menulis Bahasa Inggris masih rendah. Berdasarkan penelitian pendahuluan (preliminary study), ada beberapa masalah yang ditemukan. Siswa-siswa kesulitan mengembangkan ide mereka, tata bahasa yang digunakan dan teks organisasi dalam menulis. Mind mapping digunakan pada awal kegiatan menulis dan dicocokkan pada tahap perancangan. Tujuan dari penerapan strategi mind mapping ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dalam menulis recount text dan dapat membantu siswa dalam mengorganisasi ide mereka. Penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang terdiri dari 2 siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri atas 2 pertemuan yang mencakup perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi dan refleksi. Kriteria kesuksesan dari penelitian ini adalah jika 60% dari jumlah siswa (18 siswa) dapat mencapai KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum) yang telah ditentukan yaitu 75 (dari skala 1-100). Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 8B dari MTs. Surya Buana Malang yang terdiri dari atas 29 siswa. Langkah-langkah dalam menerapkan strategi di adaptasi dari langkahlangkah dari pembuatan mind mapping oleh Buzan (2007). Penerapan strategi mind mapping mengikuti serangkain langkah-langkah berikut ini: (1) mengenalkan mind mapping kepada siswa dan memberikan contoh konkritnya, (2) mendiskusikan organisasi teks dan bahasa yang digunakan dalam teks recount, (3) memberikan siswa tugas langsung untuk menganalisis karakteristik dari teks recount, (4) meminta siswa untuk membuat mind mapping mereka sendiri berdasarkan pengalaman mereka, (5) menulis teks recount. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini, terlihat bahwa hasil belajar siswa meningkat pada aspek nilai siswa yang mencakup content, organization, language dan mechanics. Dalam penelitian pendahuluan (Preliminary Study) ditemukan bahwa hanya 6 siswa (20.69%) yang dapat memenuhi kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM). Kemudian ada kenaikan pada siklus 1 dan siklus 2. Terdapat 48.3% dari siswa (14 siswa) yang dapat memenuhi KKM pada siklus 1 dan terdapat 69% dari jumlah siswa (20 siswa) yang dapat memenuhi KKM pada siklus 2.

English Abstract

This study was conducted on the basis of problems faced by the teacher in English teaching in the classroom. After conducting the interview with the English teacher in MTs. Surya Buana Malang, it was found the students’ writing ability in writing English was still low. Based on the preliminary study, there were several problems found. The students faced difficulty in developing their ideas, using grammar and applying generic structure in writing. Mind mapping was used in the prewriting stage and fit the function of outline. The aims of implementing mind mapping strategy was to improve students’ writing ability in writing recount text and it could help students to organize their ideas. The design of this study was Classroom Action Research which consisted of 2 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 2 meetings which consisted of planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The criteria of success of the research were if 60% (18 students of the population) of the students were able to reach the KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum) which was 75 (in scale 1-100). The subject of the research was a class of eighth grade of MTs. Surya Buana Malang consisting of 29 students. The steps in implementing the strategy was adapted from the steps of making mind mapping by Buzan (2007). The implementation of mind mapping strategy follows a set of steps: (1) introducing mind mapping to the students by giving direct example, (2) discussing the generic structure and language feature and the language used in recount text, (3) giving the students direct exercise to analyze the characteristics of recount text, (4) asking the students to make their own mind map of their experience, (5) writing recount text. Based on the data obtained on the research, there was an improvement on the students’ score of writing especially in term of content, organization, language and mechanics. In the preliminary study there were only 6 students (20.69%) passed the KKM. However, there were improvement result after Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 implemented. There were 48.3% of students (14 students) in Cycle 1 and 69% of the students (20 students) in cycle 2 who passed the KKM. Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided for the teacher and future researcher. In implementing this strategy, teacher should be aware of the following considerations. In using the media or strategy, the teacher has to make sure that the media will help students in writing process. Then, recommendation for the future researcher is to conduct the research by implementing Mind Mapping strategy in other language skills.
