Abstract

English Abstract

Every language learner is experiencing a learning process in which it involves the use of language learning strategies towards his acquisition in learning a second/foreign language. In detail, the use language learning strategies are influenced by several factors, in which age profile is identified as one of the factors that play a role in the use of language learning strategies (Oxford, 1990). Therefore, the researcher conducted a study to discover the different preferences of language learning strategies among adolescent and early adult students of General English Class in EF Malang. This study used quantitative approach with a descriptive depth. Furthermore, the researcher employed Descriptive Statistics as the statistical technique in presenting data in a frequency distribution. In addition, the researcher used SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) as the instrument to collect data. Reliability and validity test were administered in this research through SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) in order to acquire a high quality of the instrument and a normal data in which it implies valid representatives of the population. The findings showed that adolescent and early adult students were employing different preferences in overall language learning strategies. With a sample of 54 of the adolescent students and a sample of 20 of the early adult students, this study affirmed that both students at the age of 11 to 20 –or known as the adolescence– and students at the age of 20s –or known as the early adulthood– were using memory, compensation, and affective strategies in a medium preference. Meanwhile, the use of metacognitive and social strategies showed a high preference among students at both age groups. Furthermore, the only finding that showed a different preference is cognitive strategies in which the adolescent students affirmed a medium preference, while the early adult students implied a high preference. In short, metacognitive strategies are the most used language learning strategies, while affective strategies are the least used language learning strategies of both age groups. The researcher suggests the teachers of EF Malang to integrate the proper language learning strategies into the learning activities that are suitable with the age profile of the students. Therefore, the students of EF Malang might have the chance to evaluate language learning strategies they are mostly and rarely using.
