Abstract
Di perguruan tinggi, siswa perlu berkomunikasi dengan guru mereka untuk tujuan akademik dan mereka berbicara dengan guru mereka dengan gaya yang berbeda. Penulis melakukan studi tentang gaya bicara yang digunakan dalam konsultasi tesis oleh siswa di Fakultas Studi Budaya, Universitas Brawijaya. Ada dua masalah yang akan dijawab dalam penelitian ini, yaitu: (1) gaya bicara seperti apa yang digunakan ketika siswa berkonsultasi dengan tesis mereka kepada penyelia mereka. (2) Faktor-faktor apa yang mempengaruhi penggunaan gaya bicara. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dari Martin Joos (1967) dan Holmes (2001). Penulis menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dalam penelitian ini yang berarti bahwa semua data dan temuan disajikan dan dibahas secara deskriptif. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada tiga jenis gaya bicara yang digunakan oleh siswa yang berkonsultasi dengan tesis mereka kepada penyelia mereka. Mereka adalah gaya formal, gaya konsultatif dan gaya kasual. Gaya yang paling sering digunakan oleh siswa adalah gaya kasual dan gaya paling sering adalah gaya formal. Penulis juga menemukan bahwa ada dua faktor utama yang mempengaruhi penggunaan gaya bicara, usia penerima dan konvergensi ucapan. Sementara faktor-faktor lain hanya memainkan peran kecil, bahkan divergensi pidato tidak mempengaruhi gaya bicara siswa sama sekali. Kesimpulannya, para siswa menggunakan gaya formal, gaya konsultatif dan gaya kasual selama sesi konsultasi, tetapi gaya kasual adalah gaya paling sering yang digunakan. Ini terjadi karena keempat siswa dipengaruhi oleh usia pengendalian dan konvergensi ucapan. Penulis menyarankan bahwa peneliti berikutnya mengamati jenis-jenis gaya bicara di objek lain dan topik baru, penulis juga berharap bahwa peneliti berikutnya dapat menganalisis jenis gaya bicara menggunakan teori lain selain dari teori Martin Joos.
English Abstract
In college, students need to communicate with their teachers for academic purposes and they speak to their teachers in different style. The writer conducted a study about speech style used in thesis consultation by students in Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya. There are two problems to be answered in this study, namely: (1) what kind of speech styles used when students are consulting their thesis to their supervisors; (2) what factors are affecting the use of the speech style. The theories used in this study are from Martin Joos (1967) and Holmes (2001). The writer uses qualitative research method in this study which means that all the data and the findings are presented and discussed descriptively. This study reveals that there are three kinds of speech style used by the students who are consulting their thesis to their supervisors; they are formal style, consultative style and casual style. The most frequent style used by the students is casual style and the least frequent style is formal style. The writer also finds that there are two main factors that affect the use of speech styles, age of the addressee and speech convergence. While the other factors only play small role, even speech divergence does not affect the students speech style at all. In conclusion, the students used formal style, consultative style and casual style during the consultation sessions, but casual style is the most frequent style that was used. This happened because the four students were affected by the age of addressee and speech convergence. The writer suggests that next researchers observed types of speech style in other objects and new topics, the writer also expects that next researchers can analyze the type of speech style using other theory aside from theory of Martin Joos.
