Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui klasifikasi, makna, serta fungsi dari idiom yang digunakan dalam dialog dari tokoh utama novel Beautiful Creatures. Ada tiga masalah dalam penelitian ini yaitu: (1) klasifikasi dari idiom yang digunakan dalam novel Beautiful Creatures, (2) makna dari dialog mengandung idiom yang ditemukan dalam novel Beautiful Creatures, dan (3) fungsi dari idiom yang digunakan dalam novel Beautiful Creatures. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan analisis dokumen atau isi karena berfokus untuk meneliti idiom yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama novel Beautiful Creatures. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori dari Seidl dan McMordie (1988) untuk klasifikasi dan makna idiom, serta teori dari McCarthy dan O’Dell untuk fungsi dari idiom. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan sembilan tipe idiom yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama dari novel Beautiful Creatures. Penulis menemukan tigapuluh satu penggunaan idiomatic dengan kata kunci, lima idiom dengan kata benda dan kata sifat, lima pasangan idiomatic, dua idiom dengan preposisi, tujuh susunan kata kerja, empat verbal idiom, dua idiom untuk subyek tertentu, tiga idiom yang mengandung kata kunci tertentu, dan delapan idiom yang menggunakan perbandingan. Makna dari idiom yang ditemukan tersebut tergantung pada konteksnya. Fungsi dari idiom yang ditemukan adalah untuk menegaskan sebuah pernyataan dari suatu kondisi, untuk mengomentari orang lain, untuk mengomentari suatu situasi, untuk membuat anekdot lebih menarik, dan untuk menarik perhatian pembaca. Penulis berharap peneliti selanjutnya dapat menggunakan temuan penelitian ini sebagai referensi tambahan dan dapat membuat mereka lebih paham tentang idiom dalam semantic. Sebagai tambahan, penulis juga menyarankan untuk peneliti selanjutnya agar menggunakan obyek dan teori yang berbeda untuk melakukan penelitian pada permasalahan dan teori yang lain.
English Abstract
This study aims at examining the classification and the meaning of idioms, also the function of idioms used in the dialogues of the main character in novel Beautiful Creatures. There are three problems of the study: (1) the classifications of idioms used in novel Beautiful Creatures, (2) the meaning of the dialogues containing idioms found in novel Beautiful Creatures, and (3) the function of idioms used in novel Beautiful Creatures. This study uses qualitative approach with content or document analysis because it focuses on analyzing the idioms used by the main character of Beautiful Creatures. This study applies the theory of Seidl and McMordie (1988) in term of classification and the meaning of idioms, and the theory of McCarthy and O’Dell (2010) for the functions of idiom. This study reveals nine types of idioms stated by the main character of Beautiful Creatures. The writer found 31 (thirty one) keywords with idiomatic uses; 5 (five) idioms with nouns and adjectives; 5 (five) idiomatic pairs; 2 (two) idioms with preposition; 7 (seven) phrasal verbs; 4 (four) verbal idiom; 2 (two) idioms for special subjects; 3 (three) idioms containing special keywords; and 8 (eight) idioms as comparison. The meanings of idioms that had been found varies and they depend on the context. The functions of idiom that were found are: to emphasize a statement of certain condition; to comment on people; to comment on situation; to make and anecdote more interesting; and to catch the reader’s eye. The writer hopes the next writers can use the findings of the research as an additional reference and expects that this research can make them understand more about idioms in semantics. In addition, the writer also recommends that the next writers use different object and different theory to conduct the research on other problems and theory.
