Abstract
Musik rap adalah salah satu aliran musik yang dipelopori oleh orang Kulit Hitam. Orang Kulit Hitam mempunyai peran yang penting dalam musik rap. Bahkan, hampir semua rapper adalah orang Kulit Hitam. Tetapi, kondisi ini tidak membuat karakter Jimmy Smith pesimis untuk menjadi seorang rapper yang bertalenta. Jimmy mengerti apa yang harus dia lakukan untuk menjadi seorang rapper. Kondisi ini tergambar dalam film 8 Mile. Di dalam film ini, Jimmy harus berusaha untuk diterima di dalam lingkungan orang Kulit Hitam khususnya dalam komunitas rapper Kulit Hitam. Untuk mengkaji film ini secara komprehensif, penulis menggunakan pendekatan sosiologis. Teori diskriminasi diterapkan untuk menafsirkan dan menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Kulit Putih Amerika seperti Jimmy Smith berusaha untuk diterima di dalam lingkungan orang Kulit Hitam khususnya di lingkungan komunitas rapper orang Kulit Hitam. Dalam film 8 Mile, Jimmy sebagai orang Kulit Putih, berusaha keras dalam menggapai impiannya untuk menjadi seorang rapper. Di dalam usahanya tersebut, Jimmy mendapat perlakuan yang berbeda seperti diskriminasi dari orang Kulit Hitam yang menjadi mayoritas dalam musik rap. Tetapi, Jimmy tidak pernah menyerah dan berusaha untuk belajar bagaimana menjadi seorang rapper. Disarankan kepada para peneliti berikutnya untuk menggunakan pendekatan lain jika ingin mengkaji film yang sama. Misalnya, studi bandingan karena dari pendekatan ini, para peneliti berikutnya dapat menganalisis dan membandingkan film 8 Mile dengan film yang memiliki tema atau topik yang sama dari aspek sosiologinya.
English Abstract
Rap music is one of genre music which is pioneered by Black people. Black people play an important role in rap music. Even, almost all of the rap musicians are Black people. But, this condition does not make Jimmy Smith as White American become pessimist to be a talented rapper. Jimmy knows what he must do to be a rapper. This condition is portrayed in 8 Mile movie. In this movie, Jimmy struggles to be accepted in Black’s environment especially in Black’s rapper community. To study this movie, sociological approach is used. To make the discussion proper, theory of discrimination is applied to interpret and analyze the data. The result of the study showed that White American like Jimmy Smith must struggle to be accepted in Black’s environment especially in Black’s rapper community. In 8 Mile movie, Jimmy as a White American, does some hard struggles to reach his dream of becoming a talented rapper. In his struggles, Jimmy gets unusual treatment like discrimination from Black people who are majority in rap music. But, Jimmy never gives up and tries to learn how to become a talented rapper. It is recommended for the next researchers who want to study the same movie to use other approaches for example, comparative studies. By applying comparative study, the next researchers can compare 8 Mile movie with other movies which has similar theme or topic on sociological aspect
