Abstract
Fakta bahwa ideologi kapitalisme telah memberikan dampak negatif bagi masyarakat tidak bisa dipungkiri lagi. Hal tersebut ditandai dengan masyarakat telah kehilangan ajaran yang dibawa oleh agama seperti perilaku saling tolong-menolong, bekerja sama, dan dermawan. Perilaku tersebut tergantikan dengan perilaku egois, kikir, dan oportunis. Sehingga, fenomena ideologi kapitalisme yang terjadi dimasyarakat menjadi inspirasi bagi para pembuat film untuk menjadikan ideologi kapitalisme sebagai tema dalam film mereka. Banyak film menggunakan ideologi kapitalisme sebagai tema namun proses pengkomodifikasian terhadap hubungan antar sesama yang muncul dalam film Pretty Woman juga menjelaskan bahwa hubungan berdasarkan cinta dalam masyarakat kapitalis sangat sulit untuk tumbuh. Penelitian ini berfokus kepada bagaimana ideologi kapitalisme direfleksikan dalam film Pretty Woman melalui karakter Edward Lewis. Studi ini mengunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan tekstual analisis untuk menganalisis fenomena yang tejadi dalam film Pretty Woman. Penulis menggunakan teori Marxist yang juga melibatkan dua teori lainnya yaitu peranan ideologi digabungkan dengan komodifikasi. Penulis juga menggunakan teori film untuk menganalisis elemen dari film tersebut. Dalam film Pretty Woman, ideologi kapitalisme yang direfleksikan oleh Edward Lewis terbagi dalam dua bentuk yaitu elitisme dan pengkomodifikasian. Kedua hal tersebut terjadi karena peranan uang, motif keuntungan, komodifikasi, dan kebutuhan, yang merupakan kunci penting dalam masyarakat kapitalis. Elitisme dalam film Pretty Woman terjadi karena adanya pengaruh uang. Sehingga, elitisme menunjukan pada kita bahwa apabila seseorang memiliki uang, dengan mudahnya ia akan dihormati oleh orang lain dan mampu melakukan apa saja yang membutuhkan banyak uang. Sementara itu, Pengkomodifikasian dalam film Pretty Woman terjadi karena Edward lebih tertarik pada fungsi dan kekuatan uang dan mulai menilai cinta, kasih sayang, dan pengorbanan. Sehingga, tidak heran segala hubungan yang ia miliki berdasarkan motif keuntungan seperti yang ia lakukan ketika membayar Vivian sebagai pendampingnya. Penulis berharap bahwa penelitian ini dapat menjadi salah satu masukan dalam bidang Marxist. Peneliti juga memberikan saran berkaitan dengan penelitian. Penulis memberi saran agar peneliti selanjutnya untuk menggunakan teori feminis untuk menganalis karakter Vivian Ward.
English Abstract
The fact that the ideology of capitalism has negative effects to the society today cannot be denied. People who live in capitalist society have lost such teachings that have been brought by religion such as mutual assistance to each other, generosity, and cooperation. On the contrary, these have been replaced by nature selfish, stingy, and opportunism. Thus, the phenomenon of capitalism which happens in our society today becomes the inspiration for filmmakers to use capitalism as their film theme. Indeed, many films use the ideology of capitalism as the theme but the process of commodification of human relationship that appears in Pretty Woman movie also reveals that there is no such love exist in capitalist society easily. This thesis is mainly questioning about how the ideology of capitalism is reflected in Edward Lewis Character as seen through Pretty Woman movie. The type of research used in this study is qualitative approach with textual or document analysis. The writer uses Marxist criticism involving two concepts which are Capitalism and role of Ideology combined with commodification. The writer also uses film theory to analyze the element of film. This thesis reveals that the ideology of capitalism reflected by Edward Lewis divided into two forms; they are Elitism and Commodification. Those two things happen because they are closely related with role of money, profit motive, commodity, and human desire which are the important keys in capitalist society. Elitism that is reflected by Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman movie is closely related to the role of money. Thus, elitism explicitly shows us that if people have cash, they can easily earn respect from others and can do anything which requires a lot of money. The commodification reflected by Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman movie happens because Edward becomes more concerned with the role and strength of the material and starting values feelings such as love, compassion, and sacrifice. Thus, there is no doubt that every relationship he had is based on principal of benefit or economic base such as paying Vivian to be his escort. The writer hopes that this research will be one of inputs to the Marxist filed. Here, the researcher also gives suggestion related this study. The writer suggests for further researchers to use Feminism theory to analyze character of Vivian Ward.
