Abstract
Dalam berkomunikasi, terkadang orang menggunakan bahasa bebas untuk mengekspresikan perasaan mereka tanpa memperhatikan norma-norma budaya. Beberapa kata tertentu di masyarakat dianggap tabu dan tidak pantas untuk diucapkan. Pada linguistik, kata tabu adalah fenomena yang muncul di setiap bahasa karena setiap anggota masyarakat memiliki cara yang berbeda untuk mengungkapkan perasaan mereka dengan bahasa, mengikuti nilai moral, norma dan kebudayaan yang ada dan berkembang dalam setiap bahasa. Oleh karena itu, tabu menjadi fenomena umum dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hal ini juga berkembang di hampir seluruh media seperti radio, tv, majalah, tabloid, dll. Di beberapa film Amerika khususnya komedi, terdapat kata tabu yang sering diucapkan oleh beberapa aktor atau aktris. Penelitian ini menganalisis tipe dari kata tabu bahasa Inggris dan tujuan-tujuannya dimana kata tabu diungkapkan dalam film ““A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas”. Penelitian ini menggunakan 2 teori yang diciptakan oleh Wardhaugh untuk menganalisis tipe dan Liedlich untuk menganalisis tujuan dari kata tabu. Kedua teori ini memiliki penjelasan yang berguna bagi data dan detail tentang tipe dan tujuan penggunaan kata tabu bahasa Inggris. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Peneliti hanya menganalisis kata tabu yang diucapkan oleh pemeran utama. Peneliti menemukan 40 ujaran tabu yang diucapkan oleh Harold dan 22 ujaran tabu oleh Kumar. Kemudian, peneliti menemukan penggunaan kata tabu yang memiliki banyak tujuan, Harold menggunakan tabu ketika ia tidak puas dengan gambaran publik tentang orang-orang tertentu dan Kumar menggunakan tabu ketika ia berbicara dengan teman dekatnya. Disarankan kepada peneliti berikutnya untuk membuat penelitian bahasa tabu dengan menggunakan teori lain dan dapat belajar tentang penggunaan kata tabu di objek yang lain seperti novel, atau percakapan sehari-hari. Diharapkan para mahasiswa mendapatkan pengetahuan lebih tentang kata tabu.
English Abstract
In communication, people sometimes use free language to express their feeling without giving attention to the norms in culture. Certain words in some societies are considered taboo which are not appropriate to be uttered. In linguistics, a taboo word is one phenomenon which exists in most languages because every member of society has different ways to express her and his mind in language, depending on the moral values, norms and cultures that exist and develop in each language. Therefore, Taboo becomes common phenomena in today’s life. These also develop in some media such as radio, television, magazine, tabloid, etc. In some American movies especially in comedy, there are some taboo words often uttered by some actors or actresses. This research investigates the types of English taboo words and the purposes in which the taboo words are expressed in “A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas” movie. This research uses two theories proposed by Wardhaugh who analyzes the types and Liedlich who analyzes the purposes of the English taboo words. Both theories have their explanations which are appropriate for the data and the details about the types and the purposes of the use of the English taboo words. The researcher used descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher only analyzed the taboo words that were spoken by the main characters. The researcher found 40 taboo utterances uttered by Harold and 22 taboo utterances by Kumar and she also found out that the using of taboo words have many purposes. Harold tend to use taboo words when he is not satisfied with the public image about certain persons and Kumar tend to use taboo words when he talks with his close friends. It is suggested that further researchers to conduct the research on taboo language using other theories, and they are able to find the use of taboo language in other objects such as novel, or daily conversation. It is hoped that students can get more knowledge about taboo words.
