Abstract
Dalam hubungannya dengan bahasa, tabu merupakan sesuatu yang terlarang karena tidak sesuai dengan agama dan adat dalam suatu masyarakat tertentu. Secara umum, kata-kata tabu bersifat menyerang dan dianggap tidak pantas diucapkan. Namun sayangnya, banyak orang mengggunakan kata-kata tabu saat mereka berkomunikasi. Pada saat ini, baik kata maupun ucapan tabu sering kita temukan di sekitar kita. Contohnya, di beberapa film komedi Amerika, banyak kata-kata tabu yang diucapkan oleh karakter film tersebut. Studi ini meneliti tentang jenis kata-kata tabu dalam bahasa Inggris, situasi dan tujuan penggunaan kata-kata tabu yang digunakan dalam film “PIGS”. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis kata-kata tabu dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan oleh Cleaver dan Miles, situasi dan tujuan penggunaan kata-kata tabu tersebut. Dalam menyelesaikan studi ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Penulis hanya menganalisa kata-kata tabu yang diucapkan oleh Cleaver dan Miles. Dalam menganalisis jenis kata-kata tabu oleh Cleaver dan Miles, penulis menggunakan teori jenis kata-kata tabu oleh Wardhaugh (1986). Untuk mendeskripsikan situasi saat kata tabu digunakan, penulis menggunakan teori faktor sosial oleh Holmes, yang meliputi penerima, konteks, dan topik percakapan. Penulis juga menganalisis tujuan penggunaan masing-masing kata-kata tabu yang digunakan oleh Cleaver dan Miles. Setelah menganalisis, penulis menemukan 57 kata tabu yang digunakan oleh Cleaver, dan 20 kata tabu yang digunakankan oleh Miles. Setelah menganalisis kata-kata tabu yang digunakan oleh Cleaver dan Miles, penulis menemukan bahwa penggunaan kata-kata tabu mempunyai beberapa tujuan, mereka sering menggunakan kata-kata tabu untuk mendiskreditkan orang lain dan untuk menunjukkan kejantanan. Penulis menyarankan kepada mahasiswa jurusan bahasa untuk meneliti kata-kata tabu dengan menggunakan teori yang lain. Penulis juga menyarankan pada peneliti selanjutnya mempelajari lebi dalam tentang kata-kata tabu dengan melakukan analisis pada obyek lain seperti novel atau percakapan sehari-hari.
English Abstract
In relation to language, taboo is related to forbidden words because it is not suitable with certain religion and custom in society. Generally, taboo words are offensive and cannot be considered appropriate in any occasion. In many places, ironically there are still a lot of people using taboo words in a conversation or in communication. Nowadays, taboo words or utterances are easily found in our environment. For example in some American comedy movies, there are some taboo words or utterances often expressed by some actors or actresses in the movies. This research investigates the types of English taboo words, the circumstances and the purpose in which the taboo words are expressed in “PIGS” movie. The aims of this research are to find out the types of English taboo words, the circumstances in which taboo words were mostly used, and the purposes of the use of English taboo words. In conducting this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative approach. The writer only analyzed the taboo words that were spoken by Cleaver and Miles. In analyzing the kinds of taboo words, the researcher applied the theory of taboo language from Wardhaugh (1986). To describe the circumstances when taboo words are used by Cleaver and Miles, the writer used Holmes‟ theory of social factors, which included the description of the addressee, the setting, and the topic of the conversation. The writer also analyzed the function of each English taboo word uttered by Cleaver and Miles. After analyzing, the writer found 57 taboo utterances used by Cleaver, and 20 taboo utterances used by Miles. After analyzing the taboo words used by Cleaver and Miles, the writer found out that the using of taboo words have many purposes, they mostly used taboo words to discredit and as the creation of strong interpersonal identification. The writer suggests English Department students to conduct the research on taboo language using other theories. She also suggests the next researcher to learn more about taboo language by doing analysis in a novel or daily conversation.
