Abstract
Waria adalah kelompok dalam masyarakat yang menganggap dirinya sebagai anggota dari jenis kelamin lain. Studi ini tentang upaya Female-To-Male (FTM) menjadi seperti laki-laki. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah: (1) Bagaimana film Boys Dont Cry menggambarkan upaya seorang transeksual untuk memperjuangkan identitas yang diinginkan seperti yang diwakili oleh karakter utamanya, Brandon Teena? (2) Apakah upaya Brandons untuk diakui sebagai laki-laki oleh masyarakatnya menegaskan atau menentang nilai-nilai heteronormatif? Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dalam kaitannya dengan penggunaan deskripsi yang jelas dan sistematis tentang fenomena yang diteliti. Studi deskriptif dalam analisis film diterapkan dalam penelitian ini untuk menganalisis percakapan para karakter melalui naskah film Boys Dont Cry, dan juga unsur-unsur lain dari film tersebut. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada beberapa upaya yang dilakukan Brandon untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan lawan jenis, terutama dalam perubahan penampilan fisiknya. Pada akhirnya, Brandon tidak bisa menghindari pelecehan dari masyarakat ketika masyarakat mengungkapkan identitas biologisnya yang sebenarnya. Bahkan, dia dibunuh oleh John dan Tom, teman barunya. Apakah Brandon menantang atau menegaskan nilai-nilai heteronormatif, tidak mudah untuk menyimpulkannya. Transeksual berada di wilayah abu-abu, sehingga sudah sepatutnya mereka tidak merubah nilai-nilai gender dari seksualitas menjadi lawan jenis. Namun, cara mereka melampaui identitas yang diinginkan menantang nilai-nilai heteronormatif, bahwa orientasi seksual dan kinerja gender seseorang harus didasarkan pada jenis kelamin biologisnya. Penulis menyarankan agar peneliti selanjutnya menganalisis film dengan menggunakan pendekatan sosiologis karena persepsi sosial tentang gender dan seksualitas dapat berubah seiring berjalannya waktu. Perubahan sosial persepsi gender dan seksualitas juga bisa berbeda di berbagai masyarakat.
English Abstract
Transsexuals are group in the society considering themselves as the member of the other sex. The study is about the attempts of a Female-To-Male (FTM) becoming male-like. The problems of the study are: (1) how does the movie Boys Dont Cry illustrates the attempt of a transsexual to fight for the desired identity as being represented by its main character, Brandon Teena? (2) Do Brandons attempts to be acknowledged as a male by his society affirm or challenge heteronormative values? This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomenon being studied. Descriptive study in movie analysis is applied in this study to analyze conversation of the characters trough the script of the movie Boys Dont Cry, and also other elements of the movie. This study reveals that there are some attempts done by Brandon to adjust to the opposite sex, especially in the changing of his physical appearance. In the end, Brandon cannot avoid harassment from the society when the society reveals his actual biological identity. Even, he is murdered by John and Tom, his new friends. Whether Brandon challenges or affirms heteronormative values, it is not easy to be concluded. Transsexual is in the gray area, so it is right that they do not change the values of gender of sexuality of becoming the opposite sex. However, the ways they transgress into the desired identity challenge heteronormative values, that someone’s sexual orientation and gender performance must be based on his/her biological sex. The writer suggests that the next researcher analyze the movie by using sociological approach because the social perception of gender and sexuality can change as the time goes by. Social change of gender and sexuality’s perception can also be different in various societies.
