English Abstract

The Subordination toward woman is always found in patriarchal society. Women are often put on the second position with some boundaries tied for their existence. This phenomenon is presented in the novel The Mother, which raises Chinese patriarchal culture. This study aims at revealing Chinese patriarchal values reflected in Pearl S. Buck’s novel The Mother and their effects toward women’s lives characters in the novel. The writer uses feminist theory, which is defined as the expansion of feminism into theory with the purpose to understand the displacement of gender inequality that women experience as a result of living in a patriarchal society. This theory develops a system of ideas about social life and human experience from woman-centered perspective. Patriarchal notion which puts man into superior level in Chinese society directs some effects such as son adoration. This is reflected on the mother of the novel who expects the coming of a grandson. Thus, man gets privilege that the woman does not have. For instance, the husband has more nourishing meals than the mother. On the other hand, the Chinese woman is regarded unworthy for having no values. As the effects, she has no right even choosing her mate. The parent is the one who has this responsibility as the mother does to look for a man for the blind maid. Another effect is the excessive dependence on husband. A woman gets her chance to gain her pride to be called as a good wife when she has a husband. The other effect is that women in Chinese culture are also treated as commodity. A woman such as the mother is hurriedly sent to be married in her young age and to get dowry paid by the man who takes her as wife. The writer wants to give some suggestions for the readers and other researchers. First, if they want to conduct a similar topic with different culture as the background, they should get more supporting information about the culture itself. Second, for the ones who want to concern in the same novel, they can take another focus such as Chinese agrarian woman. The last, they can also focus on a certain feminist theory such as Marxist feminist theory on the same novel.
