Abstract

American Old West culture cannot be separated from the American history. The history of American Westward movement and the growth of cattle industries in the late of 19th century has established a figure of cowboy. The duty, heart, honor, loyalty, and courage are adhered to a figure of cowboy and deeply rooted in American culture. In this thesis, the writer intends to reveal the existence of American Old West culture in the modern American society in "Toy Story 2" film. The main character, Woody, is depicted as a cowboy doll which embodies the American Old West culture. The theory used is Cultural Studies Theory because it fits to the aim of this study namely analyzing the cowboy values and revealing the manifestation of Old West culture in modern American society represented by Woody in "Toy Story 2" film. The finding shows that Woody represents the life of the American Old West culture. The outfits such as hat, jeans, and boots and personality such as duty, heart, honor, loyalty, and courage are some of American old west culture revealed. Woody’s position as the main character can also be regarded as American’s attempt to bring forth the importance of preserving American Old West culture. For the next researchers, the writer suggests them analyze this film from different points of view such as using semiotic analysis by focusing on the symbols found in the film. Another alternative is analyzing the modern American society’s way of life by using sociological theory.

English Abstract
