Doctor thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
The objective of this research is to empirically assess and prove the effect of the strength of external environment and Islamic business ethics on the performance of baitul maal wat tamwil (BMT) in Java both directly and indirectly through the mediation of intellectual capital and organizational commitment. The results of this study are expected to enrich and complement the treasury of knowledge in strategic management particularly with phenomena related to the performance of baitul maal wat tamwil and factors influencing it in order to benefit academicians and practitioners. The population of this research is baitul maal wat tamwil in Java, all of which were selected as the sample as census method was used. The results of the Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis indicate that the strength of external environment does not directly affect BMT performance, but the mediation of intellectual capital and organizational commitment can make its effect positive and significant. Furthermore, Islamic business ethics have a positive and significant effect on BMT performance. As its indirect effect through the mediation of organizational commitment is also positive and significant, it does not influence BMT performance if mediated by intellectual capital. The findings imply that the good application of Islamic business ethics can directly improve BMT performance and that the strength of external environment can affect BMT performance with the mediation of intellectual capital or organizational commitment. The findings are also expected to provide practical inputs for managers and leaders of BMT. The complete integration of the research model structure using the five variables and the said mediation are the originality of this study.
