Abstract
buku teks yang memuat data industri label rekaman, penelitian ini mampumenunjukkan bahwa dominasi major players di industri label rekaman tidak tercipta secara alamiah.Studi ini menujukan dominasibig three tercipta karena aktivitas komodifikasi, spasialiasi, dan strukturasi. Big three selama bertahun-tahun melakukan komodifikasi musik populer, konsetrasi perusahaan melalui merger & akuisisi dengan perusahan- perusahan lain, dan strukturasi melalui relasi antar pemimpin label rekaman terkait kekuasaan sebagai upaya mempertahakan penguasaan pasar di industri label rekaman global. Dominasi pasar big three telah berlangsung sejak tahun 90an hingga saat ini dan membentuk struktur pasar oligopolistic yang menyebabkan perusahaan baru sulit masuk dalam bisnis ini.
English Abstract
This study wants to examine the record label industry as part of a media study of communication science. The researcher believes that new studies in the field of media studies other than conventional media is needed. Moreover, most media studies rarely highlight the issue of concentrated media ownership. Thus, to understand the relationship between the global record label industry and the concentrated ownership system, the researcher refers to the critical paradigm of political econony communication. Political economic theories are used to analyze power relations in the form of production, distribution, and consumption of communication products in this study, which are popular musics that produced by global record label companies. Nowadays, the recording label industry's concentration is dominated by conglomerate companies also known as the big three. They are Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. By analyzing empirical data in the form of news articles about the record label industry, stock reports, and textbooks that contain record label industry data, this research shows that the emerge of dominant major players in the record label industry is not naturally happened. This study addresses the dominance of big three is created because of commodification, spatialization, and structuration. They have commodified popular music, corporate consetration through mergers & acquisitions with other companies, and structuring through relations between record label elite to maintain market share in the global record label industryfor years. The big three market dominance has been going on since 4 the 90s until now and has formed an oligopolistic market structure that has made it difficult for new companies to enter this business.
