Abstract
Umpan balik merupakan salah satu tugas penting yang harus dilakukan oleh guru karena umpan balik mendorong perkembangan siswa dalam menulis. Oleh karena itu, guru harus merancang dan menentukan jenis umpan balik terbaik untuk diterapkan di kelas menulis mereka. Umpan balik guru (langsung dan tidak langsung) dan umpan balik teman adalah beberapa jenis umpan balik tertulis yang sering diterapkan dalam kelas menulis. Penelitian ini menginvestigasi persepsi siswa terhadap umpan balik guru dan umpan balik teman dalam kelas menulis. Sebanyak 133 mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Brawijaya dilibatkan untuk menjadi peserta penelitian karena mereka telah melalui semua kelas menulis dan diharapkan telah memiliki pengalaman dengan dua jenis umpan balik tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian survei dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Kuisioner dengan empat-poin skala Likert digunakan sebagai instrument penelitian. Kuisioner terdiri dari 26 pertanyataan yang dibagi menjadi tiga bagian: latar belakang siswa, persepsi siswa terhadap umpan balik guru dan umpan balik teman, dan persepsi siswa terhadap umpan balik guru langsung dan umpan balik guru tidak langsung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa memiliki persepsi yang baik terhadap umpan balik guru (langsung dan tidak langsung) dan umpan balik teman sebaya di kelas menulis. Umpan balik guru secara langsung memiliki persentase paling tinggi diantra umpan balik guru secara tidak langsung dan umpan balik teman. Umpan balik guru secara langsung lebih efektif dalam memberikan perbaikan daripada umpan balik guru secara tidak langsung. Oleh karena itu, guru harus mempertimbangkan umpan balik terbaik untuk diterapkan dalam kelas menulis mereka karena setiap jenis umpan balik membawa efek, manfaat, dan kelemahan yang berbeda. Selain itu, penelitian selanjutnya diharapkan untuk mengambil data dari kelas yang partisipannya masih dalam proses belajar menulis
English Abstract
Feedback is one of the most important tasks that teachers need to do as it encourages the developments of student’s writing. Therefore, teachers should design and determine the best feedback to be applied in their writing classes. Teacher feedback (direct and indirect) and peer feedback are some types of written feedback that are often applied in writing class. This study investigated students’ perceptions toward teacher feedback and peer feedback in writing class. A total of 133 students of English Language Education Programs in Universitas Brawijaya were involved to be the participants of the study since they had already passed all of the writing classes and were expected to have had experiences with these two kinds of feedback. This study used survey research design with quantitative approach. A questionnaire with four-point Likert-scale is used as the research instrument. The questionnaire consists of 26 statements which are divided into three parts: student’ background, students’ perceptions toward teacher feedback and peer feedback, and students’ perception toward direct and indirect teacher feedback. The results of this study showed that most of the students have good perceptions toward teacher feedback (direct and indirect) and peer feedback in their writing classes. Direct teacher feedback has the highest percentage among indirect teacher feedback and peer feedback. Direct teacher feedback is more effective to provide correction rather than indirect teacher feedback. Therefore, teachers should consider the best feedback to be applied in their writing class because each type of feedback brings different effects, benefits, and weaknesses. Besides, hopefully the further research can collect the data from classes which the participants are still in the process of writing
