Abstract

Kosakata berkaitan dengan empat kemampuan dalam bahasa Inggris. Membaca adalah satu dari kemampuan-kemampuan yang mempunyai porsi paling sering diajarkan di Indonesia. Jadi, dapat diasumsikan bahwa ketika siswa mempunyai pencapaian bagus dalam bahasa Inggris, maka seharusnya kemampuan memahami bacaan siswa juga bagus. Ketika kemampuan memahami bacaan siswa bagus, maka seharusnya menunjukkan bahwa siswa menguasai banyak kosakata. Salah satu dari sekian sekolah yang dimana muridnya mempunyai bahasa Inggris yang bagus adalah SMAN 1 Talun. Maka dari itu, peneliti melaksanakan sebuah penelitian untuk mengetahui hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata dan kemampuan memahami bacaan siswa di sekolah ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode korelasi. Peneliti mengambil 32 siswa dari kelas XI IPA 1 dengan mengaplikasikan purposive sample. Di dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan instrumen yang meliputi tes penguasaan kosakata dan tes kemampuan memahami bacaan. Kemudian, data dihitung secara statistik menggunakan SPSS v.16 untuk menegtahui korelasi antara penguasaan kosakata dan kemampuan memahami bacaan. Temuan-temuan dari penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut; (1) nilai r lebih tinggi daripada rtable (0.352>0.296) pada signifikan 5% dengan df 30, dan (2) nilai t lebih tinggi daripada ttable (5.477>1.697) pada signifikan 5%, maka (3) hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima dan hipotesis kosong (Ho) ditolak, itu berarti (4) ada korelasi antara penguasaan kosakata dan kemampuan memahami bacaan, namun (5) nilai dari korelasi ini dikategorikan rendah. Berdasarkan dari temuan-temuan, disarankan kepada para guru untuk memastikan bahwa siswa dapat mengoptimalkan pencapaian penguasaan kosakata untuk memaksimalkan kemampuan memahami bacaan. Guru juga harus memastikan bahwa tingkat kesulitan soal proporsional terlebih dahulu sebelum digunakan siswa. Untuk para peneliti selanjutnya, disarankan untuk menemukan faktor-faktor yang memungkinkan untuk mempengaruhi daripada hasil korelasi pada penelitian ini yang menunjukkan rendahnya korelasi dengan pendekatan penelitian yang lain.

English Abstract

Vocabulary relates to four skills in English language learning. Reading as one of the skills has a big portion as it is mostly taught in Indonesia. Thus, it can be assumed when students have good achievement in English, it should reflect that their reading comprehension is also good. When reading comprehension is good, it should reflect that students master much of vocabulary. One of senior high schools whose students have good English is SMAN 1 Talun. Therefore, the researcher conducted a study to know the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the students in this school. This study used quantitative research with correlational design. The researcher took 32 students from class XI IPA I by applying purposive sampling. In order to collect the data, the researcher used instrument which covers vocabulary mastery test and reading comprehension test. Then, the data were calculated statistically by using SPSS v.16 to know the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. The findings of this study were that; (1) r value was higher than rtable (0.352>0.296) at significant 5% with df 30, and (2) t value was higher than ttable (5.477>1.697) at significant 5%, therefore (3) alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, it means that (4) there was correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, however, (5) the value of the correlation was categorized into low level. Based on the findings, it is suggested for the teachers to ensure that the students can reach optimum mastery in vocabulary acquisition to maximize their reading comprehension. Also, the teachers should make the difficulty level of tests proportional first before it is used by the students. For further researchers, it is suggested to use different research design to find possible influential factors toward the result of the coefficient correlation in this study which showed a low level correlation.
