Abstract

Sebagai Bahasa asing, penggunaan Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia hanya terbatas diajarkan di dalam kelas, utamanya kemampuan berbicara. Bagaimanapun, kemampuan berbicara sangat dibutuhkan agar komunikasi dalam L2 dapat dengan mudah dipahami, namun terkadang pembelajar Bahasa merasa kesulitan untuk berbicara dalam L2 karena keterbatasan kosa kata L2 yang dimiliki. Oleh karena itu, mereka membutuhkan strategi bernama strategi kompensasi (CpS). Penggunaan CpS dapat dipengaruhi oleh tingkat kemampuan yang berbeda dari pembelajar Bahasa. Dalam studi ini, penulis melakukan penelitian tentang strategi kompensasi yang digunakan oleh siswa debat pemula dan lanjutan di SMAK St. Albertus Malang menggunakan teori CpS dari Poulisse dkk. (1990). Rumusan masalah studi ini adalah (1) Jenis CpS apa saja yang digunakan oleh siswa debat pemula dan lanjutan di SMAK St. Albertus Malang dalam berlatih debat, (2) Jenis CpS apa yang paling sering digunakan oleh siswa debat pemula dan lanjutan di SMAK St. Albertus Malang dalam berlatih debat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan menggunakan studi kasus sebagai tipe penelitiannya. Ada enam subyek yang dilibatkan dalam studi ini. Mereka adalah siswa SMAK St. Albertus Malang yang tergabung dalam klub debat sebagai ekstrakurikuler mereka. Datanya berupa ujaran yang mengandung CpS yang diujarkan oleh siswa debat dalam pidato debat secara individu. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa semua tipe CpS yaitu analytic strategies, holistic strategis, transfer strategies, dan morphological creativity digunakan oleh siswa debat lanjutan; sedangkan hanya ada tiga tipe CpS kecuali morphological creativity yang digunakan oleh siswa debat pemula. Sebagai tambahan, holistic strategies adalah tipe CpS yang paling sering digunakan baik oleh siswa debat pemula maupun lanjutan, namun prosentase dalam menggunakan strategi ini oleh keduanya berbeda. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah karakteristik dari tingkat kemampuan pembelajar Bahasa yang berbeda mempengaruhi pemilihan tipe CpS yang digunakan. Kemudian, penulis menyarankan kepada siswa SMAK St. Albertus Malang untuk mengatasi masalah komunikasi mereka dengan menggunakan strategi kompensasi. Sebagai tambahan, peneliti selanjutnya diharapkan dapat melengkapi kekurangan dari studi ini dengan melakukan penelitian tentang CpS yang berfokus pada perbedaan gender atau perbedaan usia dari pembelajar bahasa (pembelajar muda dan dewasa).

English Abstract

As a foreign language, the use of English in Indonesia is only limited to be taught in the classroom especially in speaking skill. However, speaking skill is needed to make the communication in L2 is being understandable. In fact, the learners sometimes find it difficult to speak up in L2 because of lack of vocabulary knowledge in L2. Therefore they need strategies called compensatory strategies (CpS). The use of CpS can be influenced by the different level of the learners. In this study, the writer conducted a research about compensatory strategies which are used by beginner and intermediate debaters of SMAK St. Albertus Malang using the theory of Compensatory strategies by Poulisse et al. (1990). The research problems of this study are (1) What are the types of CpS used by beginner and intermediate debaters of SMAK St. Albertus Malang in practicing debate, (2) What types of CpS are the most frequently used by beginner and intermediate debaters of SMAK St. Albertus Malang in practicing debate. This study used qualitative approach and used case study as the types of research. There were six subjects in this study. They were the students of SMAK St. Albertus Malang who joined debate club as their extracurricular. The data were utterances containing compensatory strategies produced by the debaters in delivering the individual debate speech. The finding revealed that all of the types of CpS namely analytic strategies, holistic strategies, transfer strategies and morphological creativity were used by intermediate debaters. Meanwhile, there were only three types of CpS except morphological creativity, used by beginner debaters. Additionally, holistic strategies were the most frequently CpS types used by both beginner and intermediate debaters, but the percentage in using this strategy were different in both of them. In conclusion, the characteristics of the different level of learners influenced the choice of CpS types used. Then, the writer suggests the students of SMAK St. Albertus Malang to solve their communication problem by applying compensatory strategies. In addition, future researcher are expected to complete the shortcoming of this study by conducting the study about CpS which focusing on gender differences or age differences of the learners (young and adult learners).
