Abstract

Sebuah lagu tidak bisa dipisahkan dari kehidupan sosial karena penulis/penyanyi tersebut adalah anggota dari masyarakat. Apa yang dilihat dan dirasakan oleh penyanyi dapat tercermin dalam karyanya. Pengalaman ini dapat ditemukan didalam lagu penyanyi sukses di Inggris yaitu Phil Collins dan Elton John. Dalam lirik lagu Another Day in Paradise karya Phil Collins dan If there is a God in Heaven karya Elton John menceritakan tentang kemiskinan dan protes terhadap orang kaya dan protes terhadap Tuhan. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana kemiskinan tercermin dan dikritik melalui Another Day in Paradise and If there is a God in Heaven. Pendekatan sosiologi dan teori kemiskinan digunakan untuk menganalisa kedua lirik lagu tersebut. Hasil dari studi ini ditemukan bahwa lagu dari Phil Collins mencerminkan kemiskinan yaitu tuna wisma, yang tercermin dalam karakter wanita tuna wisma yang meminta pertolongan kepada seorang pria namun wanita itu dihiraukan. Sedangkan lagu dari Elton John mencerminkan kaum miskin yang kelaparan dan keegoisan dari orang kaya yang hanya memikirkan kepentingannya sendiri. Maka munculah bentuk protes dari Phil Collins and Elton John terhadap orang kaya dan Tuhan dikarenakan adanya ketidak adilan. Penulis menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya bahwa dapat menggunakan pendekatan yang berbeda seperti pendekatan psikologi untuk menganalisa lagu lainnya yang bercerita tentang kemiskinan.

English Abstract

A song cannot be separated from social life because its author/singer is a member of society. What is seen and felt by singer can be reflected in the work. This experience can be found in songs by successful singer in England namely Phil Collins and Elton John. In Phil Collins’ Another Day in Paradise and Elton John’s If there is a God in Heaven tells about poverty and protest against rich people and against God. This research aims to reveal how poverty is reflected and criticized through Another Day in Paradise and If there is a God in Heaven. Sociological approach and poverty theory were used to analyze both songs lyric. The result of this study found that Phil Collins’ song reflects poverty namely homelessness, which is reflected in the character of homeless woman who asks for help to a man but she is ignored. Whereas Elton John’s song reflects hunger of poor people and the selfishness of the rich people who just think of their own sake. So, appear a form of protest from Phil Collins and Elton John to the rich people and God due to injustice. The writer suggests the next writer to use different approaches such as psychological one to analyze other songs which tell about poverty.
