Abstract
Sebagai salah satu bentuk dari kekuasaan, kolonialisme ditujukan untuk mengendalikan kekuasaan kaum pribumi dengan menyatakan bahwa mereka lebih rendah derajatnya dari pada kaum penjajah. Pengaplikasian tersebut menimbulkan penindasan, secara fisik dan mental. Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster merupakan film biografis yang menggambarkan penjajahan negeri barat pada awal tahun 1950 di Hong Kong, setelah kejadian Perang Tiongkok-Jepang Kedua pada tahun 1937 hingga 1945. Etnosentrisme menjadi salah satu alasan mengapa ada superioritas diantara dua budaya yang berbeda, terutama antara budaya barat dan timur. Selanjutnya, budaya timur yang terdominasi oleh kaum barat menghasilkan pemahaman sebuah konsep bernama Eurosentrisme: penempatan budaya Eropa di tengah dunia dan budaya lainnya menjadi terasingkan. Alhasil, penulis bermaksud untuk menganalisa perwujudan konsep Eurosentrisme melalui refleksi sistem tanda dan kode pada film ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa Eurosentrisme dirancang untuk menghancurkan kung fu Cina dan sekaligus budayanya. Kemudian, para seniman bela diri Cina menunjukkan perjuangan mereka untuk melawan penjajahan kaum barat dari pertandingan tinju sebagai salah satu bentuk penindasan dengan seni kung fu mereka dan menunjukkan rasa hormat terhadap perbedaan budaya diantara mereka. Orang-orang Cina tidak menganggap kehadiran budaya barat hirarkis, karena posisi diantara mereka adalah simetris. Secara keseluruhan, seniman bela diri Cina menggunakan kung fu untuk bertahan terhadap penindasan fisik yang dilakukan oleh kaum barat. Penulis menyarankan kepada penulis selanjutnya yang memiliki kesamaan minat pada masalah ini untuk menganalisa lebih dalam mengenai perwujudan Eurosentrisme dan orientalisme yang dibentuk oleh sistem tanda dank ode pada film ini. Selanjutnya, akan lebih baik jika mereka mengaplikasikan teori-teori kritis selain poskolonialisme untuk meningkatkan pemahaman mengenai permasalahan perbedaan budaya timur dan barat.
English Abstract
As a form of domination, colonialism is purposed to take control over native people’s power by stating they are far less inferior to the colonizers. The application of which causes oppression, both physically and mentally. Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster is a biographical movie that depicts the Western colonization back in the early 50s in Hong Kong, right after the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 through 1945. Ethnocentrism becomes one of the reasons why there is superiority amongst two different cultures, mainly between Western and Eastern culture. Henceforth, a dominated Eastern culture enforced by Westerners leads to a concept named Eurocentrism: European culture placement at the center of the world and all other cultures are strongly contrasted. Eventually, the writer intends to analyze the Eurocentrism manifestation through the reflection of sign and code systems in the movie. The result of this study reveals that Eurocentrism is designed to destroy Chinese kung fu and the culture itself. Later on, Chinese martial artists show their struggle to counter Western colonization by fighting Western boxing match as one of the oppression with their kung fu styles and showing respects toward their cultural differences. The Chinese people do not consider Western culture existence as hierarchical, because the positions between them are symmetrical. Entirely, Chinese martial artists use kung fu to struggle against physical oppression which is practiced by the Westerners. The writer suggests that the next researchers who have interest in this issue to analyze more about Eurocentrism and orientalism manifestations formed by sign and code systems in the movie. In addition, it would be better if they apply any other critical theories besides postcolonialism to enhance the understanding of Western and Eastern cultural gap issues.
