Abstract

Speaking is a crucial language skill to learn, especially at school. However, some students still lack speaking skills and are not motivated in learning speaking. There are several media that can be used to attract students' interest in speaking, one of them is by using board games. This survey research aimed to explore the students’ perceptions on the use of board games in learning speaking. The data were obtained by distributing questionnaire to 108 tenth grade Hospitality students from Vocational High School 1 Batu. To calculate and interpret the data, SPSS 26 and Microsoft Excel 365 were used. The results showed that the tenth grade Hospitality students at Vocational High School 1 Batu had positive perceptions on the use of board games to improve their speaking skills and learning motivation. Most of them agreed that using board games helped them improve their speaking skills such as fluency and accuracy and made them better at speaking English. Besides, they could speak well in front of the class after being taught by using board games since it could also attract them in learning to speak in English class.
