Abstract
When No One Is Watching karya Alyssa Cole menggambarkan gentrifikasi di Brooklyn melalui perspektif karakter ras Afrika-Amerika, Sydney. Novel ini dengan jelas menggambarkan perpindahan, kesenjangan ekonomi, dan penghapusan budaya. Demikian, penelitian ini mencermati penggambaran dan dampaknya yang paling banyak dialami oleh kelompok marginal, terutama pada masyarakat Afrika-Amerika dan berpenghasilan rendah. Pendekatan sosiologi sastra dan kritik gentrifikasi dan sastra diterapkan untuk menganalisis latar belakang sosial yang digunakan dalam novel, yang memperluas analisis gentrifikasi, masyarakat, dan representasi perkotaan dalam studi sastra. Situasi Brooklyn digunakan untuk menganalisis gentrifikasi sebagai penggambaran latar yang digunakan dalam karya sastra. Selanjutnya, kelas sosial, perumahan, dan ras digunakan untuk menyelidiki dampak fenomena gentrifikasi. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkap penggambaran gentrifikasi Brooklyn dalam novel Alyssa Cole, When No One Is Watching sebagai representasi urban selama pembaruan lingkungan. Menunjukkan dampak yang dahsyat pada komunitas Afrika-Amerika sebagai komunitas yang tersingkir selama proses gentrifikasi. Transformasi bangunan Brownstone, perbedaan kelas sosial, ketimpangan perumahan, dan segregasi rasial semuanya berkontribusi pada diskriminasi sistemik yang dihadapi oleh komunitas yang terpinggirkan. Peneliti selanjutnya disarankan untuk menganalisis When No One Is Watching dengan mengamati peran Supremasi Kulit Putih sebagai pendorong sistem gentrifikasi seperti yang tergambar dalam proses gentrifikasi Brooklyn dalam karya sastra untuk melengkapi penelititan ini.
English Abstract
When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole portrays gentrification in Brooklyn through the perspective of African American character, Sydney. The novel vividly draws the displacement, economic disparities, and cultural erasure. However, this study scrutinizes the portrayal and its impacts mostly on by the marginalized groups, especially on African American and low-income communities. Sociological approach to literature and the criticism of gentrification and literature are applied to analyze social background used in the novel, which extended gentrification analysis, society, and urban representation in literature study. Brooklyn situation is exerted to analyze the gentrification as the setting’s depiction used in the literary work. Furthermore, social class, housing, and race are used to investigate the impacts of gentrification phenomena. The findings of this study reveal the depiction of Brooklyn gentrification in Alyssa Cole’s novel, When No One Is Watching as an urban representation throughout the neighborhood renewal. Show the devastating impacts on the African American community as the eliminated community throughout the gentrification process. The transformation of brownstone buildings, the social class disparities, housing inequality, and racial segregation all contribute to the systemic discrimination faced by marginalized communities. The next researcher is suggested to analyze When No One Is Watching by observing the role of White Supremacy as a driving force behind the gentrification system as portrayed throughout the process of Brooklyn gentrification in the literary work to complete this research.
