Abstract

Skripsi ini mengkaji secara kritis penggambaran hiperrealitas dalam film Ready Player One (2018), dengan fokus pada konsep hiperrealitas Jean Baudrillard. Tulisan ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana film mempermasalahkan postmodernitas, di mana batas antara realitas dan simulasi menjadi semakin kabur. Pemilihan Ready Player One dalam studi ini dimotivasi oleh eksplorasi mendalam atas realitas virtual dan relevansinya dengan konsep hiperrealitas Jean Baudrillard. Film ini menampilkan berbagai elemen realitas virtual, avatar online, dan kerumitan sebuah platform virtual yang bernama OASIS. Bab hasil dan pembahasan menyajikan dua sub-bab dengan menggunakan metodologi deskriptif kualitatif. Bagian pertama mengeksplorasi representasi hiperrealitas di Ready Player One, yang dibagi menjadi cluster yang terkait dengan Easter Egg Hunt Halliday, fluiditas avatar online, escapism sebagai penghindaran, dan dinamika kompleks virtual dan realitas. Subbab kedua menggali dominasi korporat dalam Ready Player One sebagai efek dari keberadaan hiperrealitas, menganalisis secara kritis dinamika sosial-ekonomi, konsentrasi kekayaan, pelestarian hak istimewa, dan ancaman terhadap kebebasan dan kreativitas individu. Hiperrealitas di film ini termanifestasikan melalui obsesi dengan the Hunt, fleksibilitas avatar online, menghindari escapism, dan kompleksitas antara realitas dan simulasi. Adanya hiperrealitas juga memunculkan dominasi korporasi, karena obsesi masyarakat terhadap OASIS memungkinkan korporasi mengeksploitasi platform tersebut untuk mendapatkan keuntungan. Tesis ini memberikan pemahaman bernuansa dinamika kompleks antara hiperrealitas dan kekuatan dominasi korporasi yang digambarkan dalam film.

English Abstract

This thesis critically examines the portrayal of hyperreality in the movie Ready Player One (2018), focusing on Jean Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality. It explores how the film problematizes postmodernity, where the boundaries between reality and simulation become increasingly blurred. The study's selection of Ready Player One is motivated by its profound exploration of virtual reality and its relevance to Jean Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality. The film showcases various virtual reality elements, online avatars, and the complexity of the OASIS. The results and discussion chapter presents two subchapters using a descriptive qualitative methodology. The first explores the representation of hyperreality in Ready Player One, examining clusters related to Halliday's Easter Egg Hunt, the fluidity of online avatars, escapism as avoidance, and the complex dynamics of virtual and reality. The second subchapter delves into the domination of corporate in Ready Player One as an effect of hyperreality's existence, critically analyzing socio-economic dynamics, wealth concentration, privilege perpetuation, and threats to individual freedom and creativity. Ready Player One manifests hyperreality through the obsession with the Hunt, fluid online avatars, avoiding escapism, and the complexity between reality and simulation. The existence of hyperreality also gives rise to corporate dominance, as people's obsession with the OASIS allows corporations to exploit the platform for profit. This thesis provides a nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics between hyperreality and the power of corporate dominance depicted in the movie.
