(2) What are the functions of the vernacular languages in the information to society? This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data sources are two COVID-19 information circulating on social media and WhatsApp at the early of the pandemic, where each source uses the Surabaya and Malang vernacular. Also, recorded interviews with respondents are used as the data sources in this study. Various articles discussing the Surabaya dialect and Allan & Burridge’s (1991) dysphemism, Yannuar’s (2019) The Reversal Process of Basa Walikan, and Alwi’ (2000) Function and Position of Vernacular Languages are used to analyze the data in this study. The results show that characteristics of Surabaya’s dialect are reflected in the five lexicons, while Malang's dialect is seen in how locals reverse the words. Lastly, there are similarities and a difference function of vernaculars used in the COVID-19 information to society. It is expected that this research can be a reference for further researchers who are interested in Sociolinguistics, especially in analysing characteristics of dialects.
