English Abstract

Hydroquinone has many uses because of its nature as a reducing agent that dissolves in water. Hydroquinone is used in medicine (in concentrations of up to 5%) to treat dyschromia, for example, Melasma and hyperkeratosis and in cosmetics (up to 2%) as depigrnenting agents in a number of body skin creams. Hydroquinone brightens the body's skin through melanocyte toxicity and inhibits melanogenesis. However, hydroquinone in high concentrations can be carcinogenic to the body, therefore this study aims to develop flow injection spectrophotometric method for determination of a hydroquinone based on the reduction of iron (III) to iron (II) in the presence of phenanthroline. The study was carried out by reducing iron (III) to iron (II) before it was complexed with o-phenanthroline. Furthermore, complex compounds were measured at the wavelength of 510 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, a calibration curve was made, and an analysis of the interference of hydroquinone iron as iron (II) o-phenanthroline. The maximum sensitivity of the Flow lnjection method work actively in the condition of 100 mL sample volume, mixing coil (1) 50 cm, mixing coil (2) 75 cm and flow rate of 5 mL I minute with o-phenanthroline 0.15 M chemical conditions and optimum conditions Iron(II) concentration of 100 ppm. The results showed that the determination of hydroquinone was carried out with the addition of the standard HQ concentration obtained by a% recovery of 97.02%. This study proves that the method of developing FIA-spectrophotometry as an analysis of hydroquinone based on iron (III) reduction to iron (II) in the presence of phenanthroline can be an alternative method for detecting hydroquinone in skin lightening products.
