Abstract

English Abstract

Periodontal disease is an oral disease that ranks second in Indonesia. Aggressive periodontitis is often associated with pathogenic bacteria, one of the dominant pathogenic bacteria causing aggressive periodontitis is Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Celery leaves (Apium graveolens L.) contain phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and triterpenoids which can inhibit the growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. While chlorhexidine is able to prevent periodontal disease due to its bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties of various types of bacteria. This study aims to prove that celery leaves (Apium graveolens L.) can match the antibacterial power of chlorhexidine to the growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans with well diffusion method. The treatment was divided into 4 groups (70%, 80%, 90%, 100%), chlorhexidine, and negative controls (sterile distilled water). The results of statistical tests showed significant differences in each concentration of celery leaf extract (One-Way ANOVA, p = 0,000) and there was a significant relationship between the concentration of celery leaf extract given to the diameter of the inhibition zone of bacterial growth (Pearson, correlation coefficient = 0,862). The conclusion of this study is that celery leaf extract (Apium graveolens L.) cannot match the antibacterial power of chlorhexidine to the growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.
