Abstract

The Sun Is Also A Star.

English Abstract

America is tightly related to the presence of immigrants which led to the emergence of racial and ethnic diversity. Racism, which is manifested in stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination, exists as the effect of the racial and ethnic diversity. Racism towards black people caused the term Anti-Blackness, replaced the word racism as it only addressed to people with black ancestry. Thus, this research aims to find out the causes of Anti-Blackness within KoreanAmerican community depicted in the novel The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon. To analyze the data of the material object of the study, the researcher used the socio-historical approach to literature. The primary data source is the dialogues, narratives, statement, or other description taken from the novel The Sun Is Also A Star. The chosen subjects are Daniel Bae as the representation of Korean-American, and Natasha Kingsley as the representation of Black as Jamaican-American. The results of this research expose that there are several causes of AntiBlackness within Korean-American community. Their presence as immigrants caused them to affiliate with other racial group, in this case, Black. In the process of affiliation, there are several emerging disputes that lead to the practice of racism. Conflicts between these groups, racial purity, endogamy and Confucian values which still adhere to Daniel’s family as the representation of KoreanAmerican family are the causes of the existence of Anti-Blackness.
