English Abstract
Dark Night: A True Batman Story is a graphic novel written by Paul Dini, the animator and the author of many DC animations and graphic novels ever released. DC Comics studio is known for its famous caped crusader icon, Batman, as the portrayal of the hero with a darker persona and theme for its story. As Paul Dini released his first graphic novel with its personal story about his psychological conflict that portrays his imaginary characters in a form of Batman’s universe characters, the writer decided to find the implementation from the psychology and semiotics theory in the graphic novel. In this research, the writer took the Dark Night: A True Batman Story graphic novel as the object for this research as the graphic novel itself contained the story that would relate to the psychological issues which its author has. The writer applied the theory of psychoanalysis and semiotic to find any data that would be related to the research itself. The Freudian psychological theory is used as the writer took particular concepts of the dynamic model of mind to reveal the depiction of the Id and Super-Ego within the imaginary friends of Dini. The semiotic theory is also used to reveal the symbolism which each imaginary friends of Dini were investing to symbolize specific meanings. The data that had been collected were taken in the form of screenshots of the comic’s panel which depicted many illustrations and dialogues that were related to the Freudian concepts and semiotic symbol theory. The result of this research shows that the graphic novel applied the dynamic model of mind concept from Freudian psychoanalysis theory and symbolism concept from semiotic theory within the story illustrated in the graphic novel. The depiction of psychoanalysis and symbolism within his graphic novel applied correctly to the origin theory of Freudian psychoanalysis and semiotic symbolism. The suggestions for the next researchers are to use different academic theories or approaches
