Abstract

Buku teks adalah salah satu media instruksional yang digunakan oleh guru dan murid untuk mendukung proses belajar dan mengajar. Buku teks dapat membantu guru dan juga murid dalam mencapai tujuan dan sasaran dari belajar Bahasa Inggris. Salah satu hal penting yang menjadi focus sebagai sebuah buku yang baik adalah buku teks harus mempertimbangkan tentang kesetaraan gender antara laki-laki dan perempuan dan menghindari adanya bias gender. Maka dari itu, peneliti bermaksud untuk menganalisis representasi gender yang mengacu pada dimensi bahasa melalui teks monolog dan dimensi ilustrasi melalui gambar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif sebagai desain penelitian. Objek penelitian ini adalah buku bahasa Inggris untuk siswa kelas 3 SMA. Peneliti menggunakan checklist sebagai instrument penelitian. Checklist tersebut dikembangkan oleh 9 pakar ahli, untuk dimensi bahasa antara lain Cohen and Manion (1992), Dominiquez (1992), Ching (2014), Porreca (1984), and Stockdale (2006), Sementara itu untuk dimensi ilustrasi antara lain Sovic’s and Hus’ (1984), Gharbavi (2012), Holmiqvist and Gjorup (2006), and Nofal and Qawar (2015). Representasi gender pada buku teks dianalisis melalui item bahasa pada teks monolog dan item ilustrasi pada gambar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah total laki-laki dan perempuan dalam dimensi bahasa adalah 34 laki-laki dan 28 perempuan. Jumlah total laki-laki dan perempuan dalam dimensi gambar adalah 14 laki-laki dan 8 perempuan. Untuk total keseluruhan representasi kesetaraan gender antara laki-laki dan perempuan sebanyak 48 laki-laki dan 36 perempuan. Perbandingan laki-laki dan perempuan sebanyak 14% yang mana memenuhi teori Stockdale tentang ketidakseimbangan gender. Stockdale (2006) menyebutkan bahwa jika perbandingan antara laki-laki dan perempuan lebih dari 5% di segala kategori bisa dikatakan bahwa gender tersebut tidak seimbang.

English Abstract

Textbook is one of the instructional media used by teacher and students to support the teaching and learning process. Textbooks can help teachers and also students in achieving aims and objectives of EFL learning. One of important things that should become a focus of good textbook is a textbook should consider about gender equality between men and women and the avoidance of gender biases. Therefore, the researcher attempted to analysed the gender representation in a textbook in terms of language items dimensions through monolog texts and illustrations dimension through pictures. This study used descriptive qualitative method as the research design. The object of this study is an English textbook for third grade students of senior high school. The researcher used checklist as the research instrument. The checklist was developed by nine experts. For language items dimension they are Cohen and Manion (1992), Dominiquez (1992), Ching (2014), Porreca (1984), and Stockdale (2006), while for the illustrations dimensions, they are Sovic’s and Hus’ (1984), Gharbavi (2012), Holmiqvist and Gjorup (2006), and Nofal and Qawar (2015). The gender representation of textbook was analysed through language items in monolog texts and illustrations items in pictures. The results showed that the number of male and female in language item dimension totally 34 male and 28 female. The number of male and female in illustration dimension totally 14 male and 8 female. The overall number of the gender equality representation of male and female in the textbook was 48 male and 36 female. The difference between male and female is 14%, therefore it fulfils Stockdale’s theory about imbalance gender. Stockale (2006) mentions that if the difference between male and female more than 5% in any category it will be seen as significant imbalance.
