Abstract
Perbincangan dapat menjadi sebuah hiburan. Salah satu program hiburan di televise atau radio adalah program Talk Show. Talk Show menampilkan sepasang atau sebuah kelompok orang berdiskusi tentang berbagai macam topik dengan pembawa acara. Penulis melakukan sebuah penelitian tentang strategi kesopanan yang digunaka oleh Craig Ferguson dan James Corden sebagai pembawa acara The Late Late Show di CBS. Rumusan masalah dari penelitian ini adalah; Apa saja strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh Craig Ferguson dan James Corden sebagai pembawa acara The Late Late Show di CBS. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif dan kualitatif, sebab penulis menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk menganalisa data, dan pendekatan deskriptif untuk menjelaskan karakter, fakta dan hubungan antara kejadian dari hasil penelitian. Data dalam penelitian ini akan dianalisa menggunakan teori kesopanan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987). Hasil dari penelitian ini terdiri dari 241 ucapan oleh Craig Ferguson dan 135 ucapan oleh James Corden. Craig Ferguson dan James Corden mengancam wajah negative and positif sang pendengar. Craig Ferguson melakukan 114 bald onrecord, 84 kesopanan positif, 17 kesopanan negatif, dan 28 off-record. Sedangkan James Corden melakukan 73 bald on-record, 42 kesopanan positif, 11 kesopanan negatif, dan 9 off-records. Berdasarkan penemuan, sebagai pembawa acara The Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson dan James Corden sering mengancam wajah negative pendengar. Keduanya paling sering menggunakan strategi bald on-record, diikuti dengan strategi kesopanan positif. Penulis menyarankan untuk peneliti selanjutnya untuk meneliti lebih dalam tentang latar belakang Craig Ferguson dan James Corden, karena hal ini berpotensi untuk mempengaruhi pemilihan jenis strategi kesopanan mereka
English Abstract
Conversation could be an entertainment. One of many entertainment programs on television or radio is a Talk Show program. A talk show is where a couple or a group of people discussing various topics with the host of the show. The writer conducted a research about politeness strategy used by Craig Ferguson and James Corden as the host of The Late Late Show on CBS. The research problem is; What are the politeness strategies that are used by Craig Ferguson and James Corden as the host of The Late Late Show on CBS. This research employed descriptive and qualitative approach, since the writer used the qualitative approach to analyze the data, and descriptive approach to describe the result characteristics, facts, and relationships between phenomenons. The data of this research were analyzed based on politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this research consists of 241 utterances performed by Craig Ferguson and 135 utterances performed by James Corden. Both of Craig Ferguson and James Corden threaten the hearer’s negative and positive face. Craig Ferguson performed 114 bald on-record, 84 positive politeness, 17 negative politeness, and 28 off-record. While James Corden performed 73 bald on-record, 42 positive politeness, 11 negative politeness, and 9 off-records. Based on the findings, as the host of The Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson and James Corden frequently threatened the hearer’s negative face. Both of them performed bald on-record strategy the most, followed by positive politeness strategy. The writer suggests for the next researcher to investigate more about Craig Ferguson and James Corden’s background, as it potentially could impact the types of politeness strategy they chosen
