Abstract

Penelitian ini mengangkat tema peran Non-governmental Organizations (NGO). World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) merupakan salah satu NGO lingkungan yang membantu smallholders untuk menerapkan praktik kelapa sawit berkelanjutan yang berfokus pada aspek sosial, ekonomi, dan lingkungan dalam memproduksi Crude Palm Oil (CPO) dan Palm Kernel Oil (PKO). Secara tidak langsung, WWF juga turut membantu smallholders untuk mendapatkan sertifikasi Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) agar penjualannya lebih meningkat, mengingat banyak kampanye negatif yang muncul akibat praktik produksi kelapa sawit yang tidak ramah lingkungan dan menyebabkan perubahan iklim, padahal permintaan terhadap produk turunannya terus meningkat. Penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan data yang dikumpulkan dari buku, artikel, berita, jurnal, dan wawancara dengan narasumber kompeten dari penelitian lapangan yang dilaksanakan di Kota Pekanbaru dan Kabupaten Pelalawan, Provinsi Riau. Penelitian ini dianalisa menggunakan konsep NGO Roles oleh David Lewis. Penemuan dalam penelitian ini adalah bahwa WWF berhasil dalam menduukung Asosiasi Petani Sawit Swadaya Amanah untuk mendapatkan sertifikasi RSPO pada 2013, berdasarkan perannya sebagai implementer, katalis, dan partner.

English Abstract

This research raises the theme of the roles of Non-governmental Organizations (NGO). World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of environmental NGO that helps the smallholders to apply the sustainable palm oil practice which focusing on social, economic, and environmental aspects in their production of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO). Indirectly, WWF also helps the smallholders to obtain Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification to increasing the selling, considering that there are negative campaigns that have arisen due to the production of oil palm that is not environmentally friendly and caused climate change, whereas the demand of its derivative products keep increasing. Type of research is descriptive qualitative with data collected from books, articles, news, journals, and interview with competent interviewees from field research in Pekanbaru City and Pelalawan District in Riau Province. This research was analyzed using NGO Roles concept by David Lewis. This research found that WWF was successful to support the Amanah Palm Oil Independent Smallholders Association to obtain the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification in 2013, by its role as implementers, catalyst, and partner.
