Abstract

Analisis temuan tambahan kemudian dibahas.

English Abstract

Schadenfreude, the pleasure in seeing others being unfortunate, is observed to occur much in Instagram. In literature, envy is often linked to schadenfreude. This study researches the two kinds of envy, malicious and benign, by seeing its relationship and effects on schadenfreude. The subjects of this study are users of the social media Instagram. Participants were given the envy stimulus in the form of situational recall of envy that the users have experienced in their use of Instagram. In the malicious envy group, the participants were asked to recall an envy situation of low control and low deservingness, while the benign envy group were asked to recall an envy situation of high control and high deservingness. Afterwards, envy was measured using the Pain-driven Dual Envy (PaDE) scale (Lange, et al., 2017). The participants were then asked to imagine misfortune upon their envy target, and schadenfreude was then measured using three items that measured positive mood (Van de Ven, 2018). After performing the manipulation check, the data were then analyzed with Pearson’s correlation and linear regression. It was found that malicious envy is correlated to and predictive of schadenfreude. In the other hand, there is no found significant link between benign envy and pain of envy with schadenfreude. Additional findings are then discussed.
