Abstract
Menulis adalah salah satu metode yang digunakan untuk mewakili pemikiran orang secara visual melalui tanda dan symbol. Kurikulum bahasa Inggris di Indonesia mengharuskan siswa untuk dapat mengekspresikan ide-ide mereka melalui tulisan, terutama untuk Siswa SMP. Dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, untuk membuat tulisan yang baik, penguasaan kosakata harus diterapkan di dalamnya karena penguasaan penulisan dan kosakata tidak dapat dipisahkan satu sama lain. Berdasarkan pelatihan mengajar di SMP Shalahuddin Malang, peneliti menemukan bahwa beberapa murid memiliki kekurangan penguasaan kosa kata dan beberapa dari mereka mendapat nilai yang bagus tapi beberapa dari mereka mendapat sebaliknya. Dengan demikian, peneliti melakukan penelitian untuk menyelidiki hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata dan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif pada siswa kelas delapan SMP Shalahuddin Malang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode korelasi. Populasi penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas delapan SMP Shalahuddin Malang dan sampel terdiri dari 30 siswa. Peneliti menggunakan dua instrumen dalam penelitian ini, yang merupakan tes penguasaan kosakata yang terdiri dari 25 pertanyaan dan tes menulis teks deskriptif. Selain itu, peneliti juga melibatkan tiga penilai dalam menilai tes menulis teks deskriptif siswa. Untuk mengetahui korelasi, peneliti menggunakan perhitungan statistik dengan menggunakan Pearson Product Moment Formula dalam SPSS untuk menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa koefisien korelasi (rvalue) lebih tinggi dari rtable pada standar signifikan 5% dengan nilai df 28 (rvalue> rtable = 0,875> 0,374). Artinya ada korelasi positif yang sangat tinggi antara kedua variabel tersebut. Peneliti juga menemukan bahwa tvalue lebih tinggi dari ttable (tvalue > ttable = 9,5629> 1,701) yang berarti bahwa korelasi antara dua variabel diterima. Oleh karena itu, hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima dan hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada korelasi positif yang sangat tinggi antara penguasaan kosakata dan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa kelas VIII SMP Shalahuddin Malang. Ini berarti bahwa semakin tinggi penguasaan kosakata siswa, semakin tinggi juga kemampuan menulis mereka. Selanjutnya, peneliti menyarankan guru bahasa Inggris untuk membuat beberapa kegiatan alternatif untuk meningkatkan strategi belajar mengajar. Peneliti juga menyarankan peneliti berikutnya yang tertarik pada penelitian ini untuk mengumpulkan lebih banyak sampel pada semua pelajar bahasa Inggris.
English Abstract
Writing is one of the methods that used to represent people’s thought visually through sign and symbols. The English curriculum in Indonesia requires the students to be able to express their ideas through writing, especially for Junior High School Students. In learning English, to create a good writing, vocabulary mastery should be applied in it because writing and vocabulary mastery cannot be separated each other. Based on the practice teaching in SMP Shalahuddin Malang, the researcher found that some of the students had lack of vocabulary mastery and some of students got a good score in writing, but some of the students got contrary. Thus, the researcher conducted a study to investigate the correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive text writing ability of the eighth graders of SMP Shalahuddin Malang. This study used quantitative approach with correlation method. The population of this study was all the students of the eighth graders of SMP Shalahuddin Malang and the sample was consist of 30 students. The researcher used two instruments in this study, namely vocabulary mastery test consisting of 25 questions and written test of descriptive text. In addition, the researcher also involved three raters in scoring student’s descriptive text writing test. To find out the correlation, the researcher used a statistical computation by using Pearson Product Moment Formula in SPSS to analyze the data. The result showed that the correlation coefficient (rvalue) was higher than rtable at the significant standard 5% by df value of 28 (rvalue > rtable = 0.875 > 0.374). It means that there is very high positive correlation between those two variables. The researcher also found that the tvalue was higher than ttable (tvalue > ttable = 9.5629 > 1.701) which means that the correlation between two variables is accepted. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is very high positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive text writing ability of the Eighth graders of SMP Shalahuddin Malang. It means that the higher students’ vocabulary mastery, the higher students’ writing ability. Furthermore, the researcher suggests the English teacher to make some alternative activity to improve the teaching and learning strategies. The researcher also suggests the next researcher who interested in this problem to collect more sample to all EFL learners.
