Abstract

Student Hidjo merupakan sebuah novel yang menceritakan kehidupan seorang pelajar dari Tanah Hindia yang dikirim oleh ayahnya untuk melanjutkan sekolah di Belanda. Dalam novel, perubahan perilaku yang dialami oleh tokoh utama bernama Hidjo diakibatkan karena adanya perbedaan sosial dan kultural. Perbedaan-perbedaan yang ada mulai dari gaya hidup, cara pandang, hingga masakan, membuat tokoh utama dari novel yaitu Hidjo menunjukkan sikap untuk membaur atau larut dalam dunia penjajah. Tujuan dari penelitian yang dilakukan adalah untuk mengetahui Inkonsistensi identitas yang dialami oleh tokoh Hidjo dalam novel dengan mengunakan konsep ambivalensi dan kajian poskolonial. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan cara mendeskripsikan fakta-fakta yang kemudian disusul dengan analisis berdasarkan permasalahan. Data penelitian ini termasuk data kualitatif yang diperoleh melaui deskripsi, narasi, dan dialog antar tokoh yang menunjukkan adanya perubahan identitas oleh tokoh Hidjo dalam novel Student Hidjo. Adapun sumber datanya adalah novel Student Hidjo yang diterbtikan oleh penerbit Narasi Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perubahan perilaku yang dialami oleh tokoh utama dalam novel Student Hidjo karena adanya perbedaan kebudayaan dan sosial dalam kultur masyarakat yang berbeda. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bermaksud untuk menguraikan dampak yang ditimbulkan karena penjajahan pada masa kolonial. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan, Inkonsistensi identitas yang dialami oleh tokoh Hidjo meliputi tigas aspek, yaitu (1) Identitas dan etika, (2) Identitas yang terkikis, (3) Menyadari identitas asli.

English Abstract

Student Hidjo is a novel whose the story is about life of a student from the Land of Hindia who was sent by his father to continue his study in Netherlands. In the novel, the change of behaviour that happened to the main character is named Hidjo, which is caused by the differences on social and cultural aspects. The differences that come from lifestyle, perspective, to cuisine cause the main character of this novel Hidjo shows action to diffuse in world of colonization. The aim of this study is to identify inconsistency of identity that happened to Hidjo in the novel by using the concept of ambivalence and postcolonian studies. This research is descriptive qualitative by the way describing the facts that later be added with the cases based analysis. The data of this research is identified as qualitative data earned by descriptions, narations, and the dialogues between the characters showing the changes of identity in character Hidjo in Student Hidjo novel. The data source is Student Hidjo novel published by Narasi Yogyakarta. This research is aimed to know the changes of the main character's behavious caused by the cultural and social difference in different society. Other than that, this research is also meant to elaborate the effects caused by colonization in colonial era. Based on the result of the study, inconsistency in identity happened to character Hidjo cover up three aspects, that are (1) identity and attitude, (2) Eroded Identity, (3) Noticing original identity.
