Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan novel bertemakan kuliner karya Laksmi Pamuntjak yang berjudul Birdwoman’s Palate, sebagai objek penelitian, dikarenakan novel ini banyak menggambarkan interaksi antara manusia dengan makanan. Melalui peran makanan, dapat dilihat bagaimana identias budaya dan status sosial dikonstruksi dan dibedakan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk menemukan bukti akan konstruksi identitas dan status sosial dalam makanan yang ada pada novel tersebut. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan sosiologi karya sastra dikarenakan isi dari penelitian ini menyajikan interaksi sosial melalui manusia dan makanan. Kritik gastro turut digunakan untuk memberikan penjelasan yang komprehensif terkait tentang makanan. Terakhir, teori tentang identitas budaya dan status sosial akan digunakan untuk menguatkan ide penulis ketika sedang menganalisa hasil temuan penelitian, dikarenakan fokus penelitian ini membahas isu tentang identitas budaya dan status sosial. Konstruksi identitas yang ditunjukan di novel sebagian besar adalah interaksi manusia dan makanan, baik brupa adat istiadat dalam sebuah komunitas maupun kebiasaan yang dibentuk oleh sebuah komunitas. Makanan juga turut mempengaruhi sosial status seseorang. Jenis restoran yang dikunjungi atau jenis makanan yang dimakan dapat dijadikan tolak ukur status sosial mereka.

English Abstract

This thesis used a culinary-themed novel by Laksmi Pamuntjak entitled Birdwoman’s Palate, as the object of the study, because it portrays the interaction between human and food. Through the role of food that appears in the novel, it shows how cultural identity and social status can be constructed and distinguished through social interaction. The objective of this is study to discover the construction of cultural identity and social status through food found in the novel. The approach used is sociological approach in literature as it explains the social interaction between food and human. Gastrocriticism is also used in this study to provide a comprehensive analysis of foods. Lastly, both theories of cultural identity and social status are used to strengthen the writer’s idea when examining the research findings, since this thesis focuses on both cultural identity and social status issues. The construction of identity in the novel mainly parts of human and food interaction. Whether it is the custom that is created by a particular community or habitual concept that is constructed by the community. Food also affects how people see their social status. The place where they are going to or the types of food that they are eating represent their social status.
