Abstract

Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan penting dalam bahasa Inggris. Siswa dapat memperoleh lebih banyak pengetahuan dan informasi dari sumber apa pun dengan membaca. Berdasarkan studi pendahuluan, siswa memiliki beberapa masalah dalam pemahaman membaca. Oleh karena itu, penting untuk melakukan penelitian yang berjudul “Meningkatkan Pemahaman Membaca tentang Teks Naratif dengan Menggunakan Mind Mapping untuk Siswa Kelas Satu SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang” Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas sepuluh dengan menggunakan strategi Mind Mapping pada teks naratif di SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. Subjek penelitian adalah 22 siswa dari kelas sepuluh SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang pada tahun akademik 2018/2019. Desain penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK), yang terdiri dari satu siklus dari lima pertemuan. Prosedur CAR terdiri dari perencanaan, tindakan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Penelitian ini menggunakan daftar pengamatan, kuesioner, pre-test, dan post-test sebagai instrumen. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Pre-test dilakukan pada pertemuan pertama sedangkan post-test dilakukan pada pertemuan terakhir. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi pemetaan pikiran dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dengan mengidentifikasi struktur generik tentang teks; mengenali kata makna dalam konteks; menemukan informasi detail dari teks; dan membuat kesimpulan teks. Peningkatan siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar adalah; (1) siswa lebih aktif dan (2) siswa menikmati. Peningkatan pemahaman siswa dapat dilihat dari peningkatan prestasi siswa dari 23% keberhasilan dalam pre-test menjadi 100% pada post-test. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi Mind Mapping dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Oleh karena itu, direkomendasikan bahwa pemetaan pikiran dapat menjadi strategi yang baik untuk digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar.

English Abstract

Reading is one of the important skills in English. Students can get more knowledge and information from any sources by reading. Based on the preliminary study, students had some problem in reading comprehension. Therefore it is important to do a research entitled “Improving Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text for The First Year Students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang” The objective of the study is to improve the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension by using Mind Mapping strategy on narrative text in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The subjects of the study were 22 students from tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang in the academic year of 2018/2019. The design of the research was Classroom Action Research (CAR), which consisted of one cycle of five meetings. The procedures of the CAR consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This study used observation checklist, questionnaire, pre-test, and post-test as the instruments. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively The pre-test was conducted in first meeting while the post-test was conducted in last meeting. The result of the study showed that mind mapping strategy could improve students reading comprehension by identifying the generic structure about the text; recognizing the meaning word in context; finding detail information from the text; and making inferences of the text. The improvement of the students in teaching and learning process are; (1) students were more active and (2) students enjoyed. The improvement of the students’ comprehension can be seen from the improvement of students achievement from 23% success in the pre-test to 100% in the post-test. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that Mind Mapping strategy can improve the students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, it is recommended that Mind mapping can be a good strategy to use in teaching and learning process.
