Abstract

Biomassa termasuk pada energi alternatif yang dapat menjadi salah satu solusi untuk mengatasi krisis energi di Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh ukuran serbuk kayu terhadap properties dan karakteristik pembakaran wood pellet. Pada proses pembuatan wood pellet menggunakan kayu kaliandra sebagai bahan baku dengan variasi ukuran serbuk, yaitu 0,250-0,280 mm, 0,560-0,630 mm dan 1,000-1,250 mm. Properties dari wood pellet yang diuji meliputi kadar air, kadar abu, kadar volatile matter, dan kadar karbon terikat menggunakan standard ASTM D 1762- 84 dan ASTM D 3172- 89. Sedangkan untuk karakteristik pembakaran pengujian meliputi lama penyalaan (ignition delay), laju pembakaran, residu pembakaran, temperatur pembakaran, dan tinggi api pada pembakaran single pelet di ruang bakar. Hasil pengujian properties menunjukkan bahwa semakin besar ukuran serbuk kayu pada wood pellet akan menurunkan nilai kadar air dan menaikkan kandungan karbon terikat. English Abstract

Biomass is included in alternative energy which can be one of the solutions to overcome the energy crisis in Indonesia. This research aims to determine the effect of wood powder size variation on the properties and characteristics of wood pellet combustion. The process of making wood pellet uses kaliandra wood powder as raw material with the variations of powder size are 0,250-0,280 mm, 0,560-0,630 mm and 1,000-1,250 mm. The tested properties of wood pellets include moisture content, ash content, volatile matter content, fixed carbon content using ASTM D 1762- 84 dan ASTM D 3172- 89 standards. Whereas for combustion testing characteristics include ignition delay, combustion rate, combustion residues, combustion temperature, and flame height on a single pellet combustion in the combustion chamber. The results of testing properties show that the greater the size of wood powder in wood pellets will reduce the value of water content and increase the bounded carbon content. While the value of ash content for each variation tends to be the same. In combustion characteristics, it is found that the greater the size of wood powder, the higher temperature and height of the fire, and the lower residual combustion.
