Abstract

English Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of carrier for Polymeric inclusion membranes (PIM) to the transport of thocyanate ions. The studied carriers were trioctyl amine (TOA) and trioctylmethyl-ammonium chloride (TOMAC). PIM was prepared by diluting the polymer pase polyvinyl chloride (PVC), 1-decanol as plastiziser, and carriers TOA or TOMAC in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. The concentration of carriers was varied at 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% w/w. Transport of thiocyanate ion was conducted by using a diffusion cell comprised of two chambers, feed phase and stripping phase, which was separated by PIM sheet. The feed phase was filled with 100 mL of thiocyanate solution 50 mg/L and the stripping phase was filled with 100 mL of NaCl 1 M solution for transport study using PIM-TOMAC. Meanwhile, transpot study using PIM-TOAwas conducted by using 100 mL of thiocyanate 50 mg/L solution at pH 2 for the feed phase and 100 mL of NaOH 1 M for the stipping phase. Both chambers were stirred for 180 minutes at 150 rpm. In every 30 minutes, about 1 mL of solution was pipetted from the chambers. Thiocyanate ion concentration then was analyzed using visible spectrophotometric method at 461 nm based on the formation of iron(III)-thiocyanate complex compound. The results showed that PIM-TOMAC was more effective to transport thiocyanate ion than the used of PIM-TOA. By using PIM-TOMAC 25% w/w, the membrane permeability was 8.80 × 10-4 mL/min.cm2, the initial flux was 4.40x10-2 mg/min.cm2, and the efficiency of thiocyanate transport was 33.38%.
