Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the correlation between doe body weight, litter size, weaning weight and mortality in New Zealand White rabbit. Materials used were New Zealand White rabbits consisted of doe with average age 8-9 months and 215 kitts with age of 35 days. The method used in this research was case study and using observational method. The data were analyzed by correlation and regression method. The variables measured were doe body weight, litter size, weaning weight, and mortality. The results showed that the correlation between doe body weight with litter size was positive and strong (0.79 ), mean an increase of doe body weight will give effect on increasing in litter size of rabbits. The correlation between doe body weight with weaning weight was negative and moderate (-0.45), mean an increase of doe body weight will give effect on decreasing in weaning weight of rabbits. The correlation between litter size with mortality was negative and very weak (-0.17), mean an increase of litter size will give effect on decreasing in mortality of rabbits. This showed that the doe body weight could determine the litter size, but couldn't to determine the weaning weight, and mortality in a New Zealand White rabbits.

English Abstract

Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is one of the potential livestock to produce meat. Rabbit generally in one year could give birth 6 times with the number of offspring per birth (litter size) 4-10 head, rabbit have a short reproduction cycle (estrous 4 days) and long gestation 28-31 days, a living weight that could reach 4-6 kg. New Zealand White rabbit is one of the most commonly raised breeds of rabbit throughout the world and its popularity was long ago extended to the tropics for its high adaptability to warm humid climates, early maturity, prolific, good mothering ability, require little input costs and grow rapidly to produce a meat, high in protein but low in fat. One of the aspects that affect the success of the rabbit breeding business is the ability of rabbit’s doe. The ability of rabbit’s doe could be seen from the number of litter size, weaning weight and mortality. This research was conducted from December 2017 to February 2018 in Kelompok Tani Aji Jaya Farm located at Bumiaji village, Malang regency, East Java. Materials used were New Zealand White rabbits consisted of doe with average age 8-9 months and 215 kitts with age of 35 days. Scales used for weighing the body weight, kitt’s weight used 5 kg with a precision of 1 g, while the weight of doe’s weight using a digital scale with a capacity of 40 kg with a precision of 0.1 g, the other equipments were a tie, book, pen, plastic box and sack. The rabbit was taken place in battery cage and have one door every cage. The method used in this research was case study and using observational method. The variables measured were doe body weight, litter size, weaning weight, and mortality. The data were analyzed using correlation method then continued with regression method. The result showed that the mean of doe body weight (4.99±0.44 kg), litter size (8.07±2.03 head), weaning weight (821±0.39 g), and mortality (3.83±1.17%). The result of correlation between doe body weight with litter size was correlation coefficient (0.79), coefficient of determination (62.73%), linear regression equation (Y= -10.0538 + 0.0036X). The regression coefficient (0.0036). The result of the correlation between doe body weight with weaning weight was correlation coefficient (-0.45), the coefficient of determination (20.38%), linear regression equation (Y=1022.83-0.0404X). The regression coefficient (0.0404). The result of the correlation between litter size with mortality was correlation coefficient (-0.17), the coefficient of determination (2.88%), linear regression equation (Y= 4.5005– 0.0829X). The regression coefficient (0.0829). The conclusions of this research were correlation between doe body weight with litter size was positive and strong (0.79). The correlation between the doe body weight with weaning weight was negative and moderate (-0.45). The correlation between litter size with mortality was negative and very weak (-0.17). This showed that the doe body weight could determine the litter size, but couldn't to determine the weaning weight, and mortality of a New Zealand White rabbits.
