Abstract
Kurikulum di Indonesia menuntut siswa untuk dapat mengungkapkan pemikiran melalui berbicara (speaking). Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan tersebut, siswa perlu menata pemikiran mereka untuk membantu mereka berbicara secara lebih terorganisir. Storytelling diaplikasikan dalam studi ini untuk membantu para siswa untuk menyusun pemikiran mereka sehingga mereka setidaknya tahu apa yang akan di ucapkan. Maka dari itu, penulis melakukan studi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan speaking pada para siswa kelas 8 di SMP Brawijaya Smart School, Malang. Studi ini menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas sebagai wasah untuk penerapan teknik storytelling. Ada 12 anak yang terpilih secara acak sebagai sampel. Penulis menggunakan pre-test dan post-test untuk mengumpulkan data sehingga penulis dapat mengukur kemampuan para siswa sebelum dan sesudah teknik storytelling di terapkan. Setelah melakukan penelitian, peneliti menemukan adanya peningkatan pada kemampuan speaking para siswa. Peningkatan yang di alami oleh siswa paling pesat ditemukan pada aspek kefasihan. Mereka menjadi lebih percaya diri dan meminimalisir keraguan. Jumlah siswa yang lulus kriteria ketentuan minmal meningkat dari 75% menjadi 91% yang mana, angka tersebut lebih tinggi dari criteria kelulusan studi ini, yaitu 80%. Selain itu, nilai rata-rata juga meningkat dari 75.93 menjadi 76.39.
English Abstract
The English curriculum in Indonesia requires the student to be able to express their feeling through speaking. in order to improve it, the students need to arrange their idea to help them speak more organized. Storytelling technique applied in this study is to help the students to arrange their thoughts so they at least know what things, point, or events they need to say. Thus, the writer conducted the study to improve students’ speaking skills among 8th grade of SMP Brawijaya Smart School, Malang. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) to apply the storytelling technique. There are 12 students were chosen randomly as a representative sample. The writer used pre-test and post-test in order to collect the data so the writer can measure and compare the students’ speaking skills before and after the storytelling technique applied. It was found that storytelling technique can improve the students’ speaking skills. The progress was made by the students was mostly on the fluency aspect. They tend to be more confident and the hesitance was minimized. The number of students who pass the passing grade increased from 75% it tends to increase into 91% which is higher than the criteria of success of this study which is 80%. The mean was also increased from 75.93 to 76.39.
