Abstract

English Abstract

This research was aimed at developing and examining a consistent relationship between the contextual variable of readiness for change and Total Quality Management (TQM) practice to analyze the effect of TQM practice on the performance of listed companies at Indonesia Stock Exchange. The conceptual framework of this study was TQM implementation prosess approach in the context of business process change. Questionnaires were sent to 748 senior managers, including quality, human resources, production, plant, purchase and branch/region managers in 393 listed companies at Indonesia Stock Exchange based on Indonesia Capital Market Directory of 2008. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used to analyzed the data, in which the companies were treated as units of analysis. There were 108 data available for the analysis. The analysis results indicate that there were two main paths of the relationship between the companies` process of readiness for change and performance. They were (1) readiness for change → TQM practice → product/service quality → performance, and (2) readiness for change → TQM practice → quality commitment → product quality → performance. The total coefficient value of the first path was greater than the second, indicating that effective implementation of TQM practice must be supported by high readiness for change of the company employees to ensure the outcome quality in terms of high quality product and thus improve the company`s performance. These findings support the theory of quality management which proposes that readiness for change is a significant contextual variable, which companies rarely consider, in implementing TQM practice effectively. This research has managerial implications, suggesting that managers spend time to assess the readiness for TQM before implementing TQM practice in order to gain optimal and sustained benefits of the practice. These research findings, however, were generalized within the context of public companies only. Therefore, similar inquiry on unlisted companies is recommended for future research.
