Abstract
Desain adalah salah satu hal yang sangat penting yang harus diperhatikan didalam evaluasi buku pelajaran. Hal itu dikarenakan desain dapat mempengaruhi motivasi pembaca. Karena itu penelitian ini diselenggarakan untuk mengevaluasi desain buku. Sejauh ini, kebanyakan evalusai buku pelajaran hanya focus pada konten isi dan penggunaan bahasa saja. Hal ini terlihat pada penelitian yang fokus pada desain masih sangat jarang ditemukan. Karena itulah peneliti akan mengevaluasi buku pelajaran yang fokus pada susunan desain buku dengan menggunakan teorinya Mark dan Elling didalam Sheldon (1987). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi desain yang digunakan dibuku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang terbaru edisi kedua 2016 yang sudah digunakan oleh kelas sepuluh SMA. Penelitian ini menggunakan descriptive qualitative design. Observasi dan wawancara telah digunakan untuk mendapatkan data. Untuk observasi, peneliti menggunakan 23 pertanyaan yang diadaptasi dan dikembangkan dari teorinya Mark dan Ellis dalam bukunya Sheldon (1987) dalam hal kriteria sebuah desain yang dibagi menjadi tiga bagian yaitu relevance, accessibility, dan cohesion. Untuk wawancara, peneliti menggunakan 4 open-ended question yang diadaptasi dari angket untuk dua guru bahasa inggris SMA yang menjadi responden. Temuan dari penelitian ini dipaparkan dalam kriteria relevance, hasilnya adalah 32 poin dari 36. Dalam kriteria accessibility, hasilnya adalah 26 poin dari 27. Dalam kriteria cohesion telah memenuhi semua kriteria, hasilnya adalah 6 poin dari 6. Hasil penemuan dari angket/ceklis akan dihitung menggunakan rumus untuk mengetahui hasil dari nilai akhir angket/ceklis. Pada akhirnya, hasil dari nilai akhir adalah 92.75 poin. Jadi, ini memperlihatkan bahwa penggunaan desain di dalam buku Bahasa Inggris yang terbaru tersebut sudah sangat bagus.
English Abstract
Design is one of the important things that should be considered in evaluating course book. It is because the design could influence the reader’s motivation to read further. Thus, this research was conducted to evaluate the design of a course book. So far, most of course book evaluation research just focused on the content and language use. It shows that the research which focuses on the design course book is barely found. Thus, the researcher evaluated the course book that focus on the layout design by using Mark and Ellis on Sheldon (1987) theory. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the design used in the new Bahasa Inggris course book. It was the second edition 2016 that has been used by the 1st year students of senior high school. This research used descriptive qualitative design. The observation and interview were done to get the data. For the observation, the researcher used 23 checklist’s questions adapted and developed from the theory by Mark and Ellis on Sheldon (1987) which is divided into three criteria those are relevance, accessibility, and cohesion. For the interview, the researcher used 4 open-ended questions adapted from the checklist’s questions to two English teachers of senior high school as became the participants. The finding showed that in terms of the relevance, the course book could fulfill 32 points out of 36. In terms of the accessibility, the course book could fulfill 26 points out of 27. In terms of the cohesion, the course book fulfill all of the criteria, the course book could fulfill 6 points out of 6. The result of the finding was totaled by using a formula to know the final score of the checklist. Finally, based on the finding, the result of the final score was 92.75 points. Thus, it showed that the design in the new Bahasa Inggris course book had a good design.
