Abstract

English Abstract

Patchouli plant is one of the essential oil producing plants are important, because it can contribute to foreign exchange more than 50 % of the total exports of Indonesian essential oils. Production of 2.382 tonnes of Indonesian patchouli, most of patchouli oil products exported to be used in the perfume industry, cosmetics, antiseptics and insecticides. As an export commodity, patchouli oil that is binder has a good chance because until now there has been no substitute products. Along with the increasing number of people and customs of the people who tend to wear cosmetics and perfumery, which is one form of peoples lifestyles, the need for perfume be increased every year. From this cause patchouli oil demand also increases. In Indonesian patchouli plant has been cultivated for almost 100 years in the major producing regions (Aceh and North Sumatra), but until now the yield and quality of the oil produced is varied. This is caused by several factors, one of which harvesting. Age recom- an aspect closely related to the phase of plant growth which reflects the level of crop physiological maturity and has a strong relevance to the production and content that exist in plants. Therefore, it is necessary to research on the proper harvesting to increase production yield and quality of essential oil of patchouli. This study aims to identify and study the optimal harvesting the yield and quality of essential oil of patchouli. The hypothesis proposed harvest is conducted patchouli at age 5 and 6 months after planting can result in yield and quality of essential oil of patchouli is the most optimal. This Research was conducted from December 2011 until March 2012 in Sumberjati Village, Tempeh subdistrict, Lumajang. Altitude of 200 m above sea trials and an average temperature of 22 – 32 oC. The tools used are scissors or sickle, sacks, analytical balance, oven, board labels, stationery, digital camera, a set of tools refining, gas cylinders, tubes erlemeyer, and glass bottles of 100 and 25 ml sizes. While the materials used are varieties Aceh patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) Age 3 months and water. This study used a randomized block design. The treatment in this study is P1: 4 map + 4 mah (months after planting / harvesting); P2: 5 map + 3 mah; P3: 6 map + 2 mah; P4: 7 map + 1 mah; and P5: 8 map. Each treatment was repeated 4 times, so there are 20 experimental plots. Observations were made on 20 plants destructively according with treatment harvesting. The parameters observed were: plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, FW and DW on the leaves, branches and total crop of leaves and branches (g), FW and DW ratio leaves and branches, patchouli oil yield of leaves, branches and total plant from the leaves and branches (%), and quality of patchouli oil include: levels of patchouli alcohol (PA), the specific gravity of 20 °C, and 25 °C the refractive index. Patchouli oil quality was analyzed in the iv chemical laboratory. The data was analyzed by F test 5 % and continued with Least Significant Different Test (LSD) in probably 5 %. The results showed that the components of growth (plant height, number of branches, number of leaves) and the results of patchouli plant (fresh weight, dry weight, oil yield) increased with age and harvest the first crop harvest intervals for both age increasing. The yield of patchouli plant at the first harvest increased from age 4 map to age 6 map, then decreased from 6 map to 8 map. As for the quality of patchouli oil are not affected harvesting. Through GC-MS test, patchouli oil produced from harvesting treatment had higher levels of patchouli alcohol range from 18,40 to 22,40 %, this figure is below the SNI (30 %). The refractive index of the patchouli oil has a value range from 1,5042 to 1,5075 and specific gravity of 0,951 to 0,995 g/ml, and both have to meet standards. Based on the analysis of the economic benefits derived from the accumulation of the first crop and second crop within a period of 8 months in the area of one hectare, The first harvest is done at the age of 4 months and and the second harvest interval for age 4 months is the most optimal treatment, whether viewed from the sale of the wet ingredients, dry ingredients and patchouli oil, each of which has a value of R/C ratio of 2,34, 2,77 and 3,58.
