Abstract

English Abstract

Joining technique has been widely applied to connect or integrate two materials both metals and non-metals. One of the joining technique to integrate two materials is adhesive joint. Adhesive joint is a type of joining techniques that uses low temperature where adhesive polymer is needed. Adhesive itself is classified into natural and synthetic material. The utilization of synthetic material itself is very harmful to the environment, the availability is becoming more limited and is becoming more expensive. The study is done to investigate the effect of variation of bio-based adhesive to the peeling and shearing strength of the pine wood on the adhesive joint. The method used in the study is the experimental methods and the type of testing conducted to determine the peeling and shearing strength is peeling and shearing test. The tested bio-based adhesive variations are rubber tree sap, jackfruit and breadfruit. Subsequently, the adhesive made from bio-based adhesive joint will be compared with the synthetic adhesive counterpart, that is epoxy. The peeling and shearing test uses ± 0.1 mm of adhesive thickness and a controlled loading speed of 1 mm / min. The highest peeling and shearing strength obtained in sequence is bio-based adhesive made from the sap of rubber trees followed by jackfruit and breadfruit tree sap. Compared with synthetic adhesive counterpart, the epoxy still has the highest strength. However, bio-based adhesive has an advantage of a durable connection time and and has an abundance in quantity over synthetic adhesive. Effect of bio-based adhesive on the adhesive joint because the adhesive joint has bonding capability between material’s surfaces through characteristics such as polymer content and viscosity of each sap. Fracture occurring in the specimen is a mix fracture, where adherent, adhesive and cohesive fractures occur, indicating that the strength of adhesive and adhesive and adhesive and adherent is equally strong.
