Oo, MayNway (2014) Effect of Red Pepper Extract (Capsicum annuum) as an Insecticide towards Fire Ants (Solenopsis species) by Using Spraying Method. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
Fire Ants (Solenopsis sp.) can be hazardous to outdoor workers. They can cause serious health problems like life-threatening allergic reactions. Because of the negative impacts of fire ants, people attempt to control them by various techniques such as mound treatments and using insecticides. However, there are no methods that permanently control or eliminate them. Based on the fact that red pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a potent insecticide, a research was done to test its insecticidal effect on fire ants. This research was an experimental laboratory research using three different concentrations of red pepper extract (10%, 15 %, 20%) to kill fire ants and the number of dead fire ants after 1st hour, 2nd hour, 3rd hour, 4th hour, 5th hour, 6th hour and 24th hour were observed. The obtained data was analyzed by using One Way ANOVA test. According to the analysis, different concentrations of red pepper extract give different insecticidal effects in every hour. Based on this test, the optimum dose of red pepper extract to be used as an insecticide on fire ants is 20% and the effect increases as the time increases. From this research, we can conclude that red pepper does have potential insecticidal effect on fire ants (Solenopsis sp.).
