Effect Of Sulfur As Insecticide Towards Fire Ants (Solenopsis Species) By Using Spraying Method

Phyu, KhineZar (2014) Effect Of Sulfur As Insecticide Towards Fire Ants (Solenopsis Species) By Using Spraying Method. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

Fire Ants (Solenopsis sp.) can be hazardous to outdoor workers. They can cause serious health problems like life-threatening allergic reactions. Because of the negative impacts of fire ants, people attempt to control them by various techniques such as mound treatments and using insecticides. But there are no methods that permanently control or eliminate them. Based on the fact that sulfur is a potent insecticide, a research was done to test its insecticidal effect on fire ants. This research was an experimental laboratory research using three different concentrations of sulfur (0.5%, 1.5 %, 2.5%) to kill fire ants and the number of dead fire ants in 1st hour, 2nd hour, 3rd hour, 4th hour, 5th hour, 6th hour and 24th hour were observed. The obtained data was analyzed by using One Way ANOVA test. According to the analysis, different concentrations of sulfur give different insecticidal effects in every hour. Based on this test, the optimum dose of sulfur to be used as an insecticide on fire ants is 0.5% and the effect increases as the time increases. From this research, we can conclude that sulfur does have potential insecticidal effect on fire ants (Solenopsis sp.).
