Abstract
Kolonialisme terjadi ketika sebuah negara yang kuat ingin mendapatkan kepentingan material atau ingin menunjukkan keunggulannya terhadap negara-negara lain. Praktek kolonialisme memberi dampak yang tidak hanya bersifat material, tapi juga psikologis terhadap orang-orang di wilayah pendudukan. Salah satu dampaknya adalah penciptaan citra unggul yang melekat pada penjajah, dan citra inferior bagi masyarakat terjajah. Peneliti memilih film Sang Pencerah (2011) sebagai objek utama penelitian ini karena film ini berisi banyak elemen mengenai dampak kolonialisme yang dapat dianalisis oleh teori orientalisme yang diciptakan oleh Edward Said. Penelitian ini berfokus pada bagaimana film tersebut memberi gambaran tentang konsep orientalisme. Selanjutnya, untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang konsep yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya, peneliti membagi diskusi menjadi dua sub bab. Yang pertama adalah tentang pemahaman mendasar di Post-kolonialisme, dan yang kedua adalah tentang Orientalisme Said. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami fenomena dalam latar belakang kontekstual seperti yang terwujud dalam film dalam bentuk gambar (Visual) atau dialog (Audio). Film tersebut menunjukkan bahwa perspektif atau sudut pandang yang sering terlihat di berbagai film Barat juga digunakan di film Asia / Timur. Dalam film Sang Pencerah yang dibuat di Indonesia dan diarahkan oleh orang-orang Asia (Timur), ditemukan fakta bahwa wilayah Timur seperti Jawa dalam hal ini, dipandang sebagai tempat yang indah dan eksotis dengan orang-orang miskin, bodoh dan tidak berpendidikan. Film ini menggambarkan bahwa orang-orang Timur (Timur) kurang pengetahuan, mudah mengikuti hal-hal mistis dan tidak masuk akal semacam itu. Ini sesuai dengan salah satu dogma orientalisme bahwa wilayah Timur pada dasarnya adalah sesuatu yang perlu ditaklukkan oleh orang-orang Barat.
English Abstract
Colonialism occurs when a strong nation wants to gain material interest or wants to show its superiority toward other nations. The practice of colonialism gives impacts that are not only material, but also psychological one toward people in the occupied territories. One of the impacts is the creation of superior image attached to the colonizers, and inferior image to the colonized society. The researcher chooses Sang Pencerah (2011) movie as the main object of this study since the movie contains many elements regarding the impacts of colonialism which can be analyzed by Orientalism theory coined by Edward Said. This study focuses on how the movie gives audiences pictures of Orientalism concepts. Furthermore, in order to gain a better understanding of those concepts mentioned previously, the researcher divides the discussion into two subchapters. The first is about the main-grounded understanding in Post-colonialism, and the second is about Said’s Orientalism. The type of this research is a qualitative research. The study is aimed to understands the phenomena in a contextual background as manifested in the movie in the form of picture (Visual) or dialogues (Audio). The film shows that the perspective or point of view which are often seen in various Western movies are also used in Asian/Eastern films. In the film Sang Pencerah which is made in Indonesian and directed by Asian people (East), it is found the facts that East territory such as Java in this case, is seen as a beautiful and exotic place with poor, ignorant and uneducated people. This film illustrates that the Orient (East) people are lack of knowledge, easy to follow such mystical and unreasonable things. It corresponds to one of the dogmas of Orientalism that the Eastern region is essentially something that needs to be conquered by the Westerners.
