Abstract
Bahasa Jepang memiliki banyak ruigigo, diantaranya verba kitai suru dan kibou suru yang bermakna ‘mengharapkan’. Kedua verba ini cukup banyak muncul di buku-buku pelajaran, media massa, maupun lagu-lagu berbahasa Jepang. Akan tetapi, banyak pembelajar pemula bahasa Jepang, termasuk penulis kurang memahami perbedaannya dikarenakan tidak ada penjelasan dalam kamus-kamus terjemahan bahasa Indonesia mengenai perbedaan kedua verba tersebut. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui makna dan fungsi kedua verba tersebut sehingga dapat diketahui penggunaannya, serta mengetahui persamaan dan perbedaaannya sehingga dapat saling disubtitusikan atau tidak. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif, yaitu metode untuk mengungkap dan memahami sesuatu yang baru sedikit diketahui secara lebih rinci, dengan mengumpulkan data-data yang konkrit. Data yang digunakan adalah diperoleh dari harian berbahasa Jepang The Asahi Shimbun edisi tahun 2003 dan 2004 dan majalah Nipponia Edisi No.45, 15 Juni 2008, yang berupa kalimat yang memuat verba kitai suru dan kibou suru. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh, yaitu verba kitai suru dan kibou suru memiliki beberapa persamaan makna antara lain mengharapkan, menginginkan sesuatu dapat terealisasi, serta harapan untuk masa depan yang cerah dan baik. Perbedaannya, verba kitai suru memiliki makna lebih menekankan pada kemenangan atau keberhasilan dalam suatu pertandingan atau persaingan. Sedangkan verba kibou suru hanya digunakan untuk mengharapkan sesuatu yang dianggap baik. Sehingga, dalam beberapa kalimat yang memiliki definisi makna dan fungsi yang sama, kedua verba tersebut dapat saling disubtitusikan, dan dalam beberapa kalimat yang memiliki perbedaan definisi makna dan fungsi, kedua verba tersebut tidak dapat saling disubtitusikan penggunaannya.
