Abstract
Didalam komunikasi, manusia menyampaikan pesan kepada pendengar yang akan diinterpretasikan oleh pendengar untuk mencapai tujuan dalam berkomunikasi. Oleh karena itu, pembicara perlu untuk menyampaikan pesan dengan jelas untuk membuat pendengar dapat memahami pesan dengan baik. Salah satu cara yang dapat membantu pembicara untuk menyampaikan pesan dengan jelas adalah pembatasan maxim, terutama ketika pembicara tidak dapat memenuhi keempat maxim yang ada didalam prinsip koperative yang ajukan oleh Grice (maksim kualitas, maksim kuantitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara). Penulis melakukan penelitian tentang pembatasan maksim yang ditemukan dalam ujaran pembawa acara dari talk show Ellen DeGeneres Show. Studi ini telah dilakukan dengan menjawab permasalahan didalam studi ini, yaitu; (1) maksim apa sajakah yang dibatasi oleh pembawa acara dari Ellen DeGeneres Show (2) fungsi apa sajakah yang diterapkan dari pembatasan maksim oleh pembawa acara dari Ellen DeGeneres Show. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan dokumen analisis untuk meneliti data. Metode penelitian ini diaplikasikan untuk menganalisa ujaran dari pembawa acara melalui traskrip dari Ellen DeGeneres Show berdasarkan teori pembatasan maksim oleh Brown and Levinson (1987) and Grundy (2000). Studi ini menunjukan bahwa semua pembatasan maxim dari prinsip koperative yang ajukan oleh Grice ditemukan didalam ujaran dari pembawa acara Ellen DeGeneres Show, yaitu maksim kualitas, maksim kuantitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Pembatasan maksim ini mempunyai fungsi untuk menunjukan kepastian dan ketidakpastian didalam ujaran pembawa acara, untuk menunjukan fungsi kesantunan, untuk menandai adanya perubahan topik dan untuk menyampaikan pesan secara jelas seperti yang tercantum didalam teori dari Brown dan Levinson (1987). Oleh karena itu, pembatasan maksim ini digunakan untuk membuat percakapan berjalan dengan mulus dan koperatif sehingga pesan dapat tersampaikan dengan jelas kepada pendengar. Selain itu, didalam studi ini linguistic context membantu untuk memberi penjelasan lebih dalam mengenai penggunaan pembatasan maksim ini didalam ujaran pembawa acara. Penulis menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk mempelajari lebih dalam tentang aplikasi dari pembatasan maksim yang ditemukan di media lain. Penulis juga menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk melakukan penelitian tentang pembatasan maksim didalam bahasa lain, seperti didalam Bahasa Indonesia.A
English Abstract
In communication, people convey the message to hearer which is going to be interpreted by hearer to reach the goal of their communication. Therefore, the speaker needs to convey the message clearly to make the hearer understand the message well. One of the ways which can help the speaker to convey the message in the clear way is hedging maxim, especially when the speaker is not able to fulfill the four maxims of Grice’s cooperative principle (maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner). The writer conducts a study about hedging maxim which is found in the presenter’s utterances of Ellen DeGeneres Show. It is done to answer the problems of the study, namely: (1) what maxims are hedged by the presenter of Ellen DeGeneres Show talk show; (2) what function of hedging maxim performed by the presenter of Ellen DeGeneres Show talk show. This study used qualitative approach and document analysis to analyze the data. This research method is applied to analyze the utterances of the presenter through the transcription of Ellen DeGeneres Show talk show by using the theory of hedging maxim which belongs to Brown and Levinson (1987) and Grundy (2000). This study reveals that all hedging maxims of Grice’s cooperative principle are found in the presenter’s utterances of Ellen DeGeneres Show. There are maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner. This hedging maxim has function to show the presenter’s certainty and uncertainty in her utterance, to express politeness function clearly, to mark change of topic, and then to convey the message clearly as supported by Brown and Levinson’s theory. Therefore, this hedging maxim in the conversation is used to make the conversation run smoothly and cooperative, so that the message can be conveyed in the clear way to the hearer. Moreover, in this study linguistic contex is found to be very supporting in providing more explanation of its hedging maxim’s function in the presenter’s utterances. The writer suggests that the next researcher learn more about the application of hedging maxim that are found in other media. The writer also suggests the next researcher to conduct a study about hedging maxim in other language, like in Bahasa Indonesia.
