Abstract
Repetisi adalah teknik retorika yang mengulang kembali kata kunci atau frasa untuk menekankan poin sebuah poin penting. Apabila digunakan secara tepat, repetisi akan memaksimalkan persuasi kepada penonton. Menurut Aristotle, untuk membuat retorika lebih persuasif, pembicara harus mengpalikasikan ethos, logos dan pathos dalam penggunaan repetisi. Ethos, pathos, dan logos adalah seni dalam berbicara di depan umum. Ethos, logos dan pathos, digunakan oleh pembicara untuk mempersuasi dan meyakinkan penonton. Studi ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui : (1) tipe-tipe repetisi yang digunakan oleh Martin Luther King, Jr. dalam pidato I Have a Dream ; (2) ethos, logos dan pathos yang diterapkan oleh Martin Luther King, Jr. dalam pidato I Have a Dream. Studi ini bersifat kualitatif yang menggunakan analisis dokumen sebagai metode penelitian, mengingat studi ini menganalisa tentang fenomena sosial yakni repetisi yang digunakan dalam sebuah retorika. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah transkrip pidato dan data dari penelitian ini adalah repetisi-repetisi yang digunakan oleh Martin Luther King, Jr. Based on the data analysis of eighteen repetitions in this study, the finding shows that Martin Luther King, Jr. uses all types of repetition. The Ethos, Pathos and Logos are used by Martin Luther King Jr to strengthen the persuasive effect of repetition in I Have a Dream Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa semua tipe repetisi digunakan dalam pidato I Have a Dream. Terlebih lagi, Ethos, Pathos dan Logos dan digunakan oleh Martin Luther King, Jr. untuk memperkuat efek persuasi dari pidato I Have a Dream. Peneliti menyarankan sebuah penelitian yang lebih komprehensif di masa depan tentang tekhnik retorika yang dapat dilakukan untuk menemukan tekhnik-tekhnik retorika lain yang dapat ditemukan di dalam I Have a Dream.
English Abstract
Repetition is a rhetorical technique. It is restating keyword or phrase to emphasize the point being made. The repetition will maximize the persuasive effect toward the audiences, if it is used appropriately in rhetoric. According to Aristotle, to make the repetition more persuasive, the speaker should apply rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) in each repetition. Rhetorical appeals are the art of public speaking. They are used by the speaker to persuade and convince the audiences. This study is conducted to discover : (1) the types of repetition used by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his speech I Have a Dream ; (2) the rhetorical appeals applied by Martin Luther King, Jr. in each repetition in speech I Have a Dream. This qualitative study uses a document analysis as the research design since it analyzes the social phenomenon, that is repetition used in rhetoric I Have a Dream. The source of data of this study is the speech transcription, and the data are the repetitions used by the speaker. Based on the data analysis, all types of repetition are found in I Have a Dream speech. The Ethos, Pathos and Logos that are used by Martin Luther King Jr strengthen the persuasive effect of repetition in I Have a Dream. The writer suggests that more comprehensive studies on rhetorical technique can be conducted because many other rhetorical techniques can be found in rhetoric I Have a Dream.
