Abstract

Biomasa merupakan salah satu sumber energi alternatif yang ketersediaannya melimpah di Indonesia serta memiliki keunggulan yaitu dapat diperbarui serta ramah lingkungan. Dalam pengaplikasiannya biomassa melalui proses densifikasi yang meningkatkan kepadatan dari biomassa guna mengatasi masalah dalam hal penyimpanan dan transportasi sehingga menghasilkan produk yang disebut wood pellet. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh variasi kepadatan cylindrical wood pellet terhadap karakteristik pembakarannya. Pada penelitian ini, kepadatan wood pellet divariasikan sebesar 0,775 gr/cm3, 0,900 gr/cm3, dan 1,025 gr/cm3. Pada penelitian ini, dimensi dari wood pellet dibuat sama dengan tinggi 20 mm dan diameter 10 mm pada masing-masing variasi kepadatan. Pengujian karakteristik pembakaran disini meliputi ignition delay, durasi perambatan api, laju pembakaran, residu pembakaran, tinggi api pembakaran, serta temperature nyala api. Pengujian dilakukan dengan dua orientasi pembakaran wood pellet pada ruang bakar, yaitu orientasi vertikal dan horizontal dengan menggunakan 2 thermocouple yang diletakkan pada titik 50% nyala api, dan 100% nyala api. Didapatkan bahwa ignition delay, durasi perambatan api, dan laju pembakaran yang semakin lambat seiring dengan meningkatnya kepadatan wood pellet dikarenakan difusivitas termalnya semakin kecil. Sehingga waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk menaikkan temperatur wood pellet semakin lama. Selain itu, semakin meningkatnya kepadatan menyebabkan porositas semakin menurun, sehingga uap bahan bakar semakin sulit untuk mengalir keluar dari permukaan wood pellet. Panas yang dihasilkan semakin besar pada wood pellet yang semakin padat karena massa yang dilepas semakin banyak, sehingga temperaturnya semakin meningkat. Namun, residu pembakaran semakin menurun karena bahan bakar lebih mudah terdekomposisi akibat temperatur pembakaran yang semakin tinggi seiring dengan meningkatnya kepadatan wood pellet. Semakin tinggi kepadatan wood pellet menghasilkan tinggi api yang semakin tinggi.

English Abstract

Biomass is an alternative energy source with abundant availability in Indonesia and has the advantage of being renewable and environmentally friendly. In its applications, biomass through a densification process that increases the density of biomass to overcome problems in terms of storage and transportation so as to produce a product called wood pellets. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in cylindrical wood pellet density on it’s combustion characteristics. In this study, the density of wood pellets varied by 0.775 gr/cm3, 0.900 gr/cm3, and 1.025 gr/cm3. In this study, the dimensions of wood pellets were made equal to the height of 20 mm and the diameter of 10 mm at each density variation. Testing of combustion characteristics here include ignition delay, duration of fire propagation, combustion rate, combustion residue, height of combustion flame, and flame temperature. Tests were carried out with two orientations of burning wood pellets in the combustion chamber, namely vertical and horizontal orientations using 2 thermocouples placed at 50% flame point, and 100% flame. It was found that the ignition delay, the duration of fire propagation, and the rate of combustion were getting slower as the density of wood pellets increased due to its smaller diffusivity. So the time needed to increase the temperature of wood pellets is getting longer. In addition, the increasing density causes the porosity to decrease further, so that the fuel vapor becomes more difficult to flow out of the wood pellet surface. The heat generated is greater in wood pellets which are getting denser because more mass is released, so the temperature increases. However, combustion residue decreases because the fuel is decomposed more easily due to higher combustion temperatures along with the increasing density of wood pellets. The higher density of wood pellets produces higher flame height.
